Benson Boone delighted audiences with his flip-filled performance during last Sunday’s Grammy Awards, and now clips of him as a teenage compeтιтive diver have resurfaced and gone viral.

Five years before he ever made a splash in the music industry, the 22-year-old precocious pop star was a gifted member of the Monroe High School diving team in Washington State.

Benson competed in the WIAA Boys State Swimming and Diving Championships 4A three years in a row, landing sixth place in the one-meter diving event in 2020 and seventh place in 2019 – according to DiveMeets.

In the accompanying playbill, the self-described ‘hyper’ kid wrote in his bio: ‘He enjoys singing, sports, and backflipping.’

Benson’s father Nate Boone explained on KING 5 Seattle last Friday: ‘When he was probably three years old, we just could never stop from having him do backflips off the couch or flips wherever he could.’

Last Sunday, Boone – who caught Jennifer Lopez’s eye at the Grammys – lost the trophy for best new artist to Chappell Roan, but he still made quite an impression with his sparkly blue jumpsuit and subsequent ‘aggressive’ crotch grab.

The Mormon musician – who gets 40.8M monthly listeners on Spotify – has had several songs chart including his hit Beautiful Things, which landed the No. 2 spot on the Billboard H๏τ 100 last year.

Benson’s debut studio album Fireworks & Rollerblades scored the No. 6 spot on the Billboard H๏τ 200 chart.
