Kanye West has revealed it was his former wife Kim Kardashian who urged him to see a doctor after she suspected the rapper had been misdiagnosed with bipolar. 

The American musician, 47, hit headlines back in July 2020 after reports he was ‘in the middle of a serious bipolar episode’ which left his family ‘very concerned’.

And while Kanye even referred to his diagnosis with the mental health condition in his previous albums, he has now revealed it was a misdiagnosis as he confessed he actually has autism. 

Speaking on the latest episode of Justin Laboy’s podcast The Download, Kanye opened up about his mental health as he admitted: ‘The constant feeling of not being in control spun me out of control’.

The rapper began: ‘They call it specifically bipolar, they put that on me they I said it so I put it on the album.

‘I went to this doctor, one that works with Justin Bieber, one that work with I’m not even going to name other names and stuff.

While Kanye didn’t specifically name Kim, the reality star, now 44, spoke out at the time amid the rapper’s struggles with his mental health. 

Kim previously said she was ‘powerless’ and called Kanye ‘brilliant but complicated’ as she explained ‘his words sometimes do not align with his intentions’.

Kanye continued: ‘My wife took me to do that because she said: “Something about your personality doesn’t feel like it’s bipolar. I’ve seen bipolar before,” She’s educated so she said “I’ve seen bipolar before”.’ 

Revealing what he really has he referenced the 1988 film Rain Man as he continued: ‘I’ve come to find out it’s really a case of autism that I have and autism takes you to a Rainman thing where you’re like “oh man I’m going wear this Trump hat because I like Trump in general and then when people tell you to not do it you just get on that one point.

‘And that’s my problem, when fans tell me to do my album in a certain way I’ll do it the opposite way just because I got my money right!’ 

Autism refers to a broad range of conditions characterised by challenges with social skills, repeтιтive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. 

And Kanye explained that it was hard for the people around him as he added: ‘It’s so difficult for them because this is like a grown man, you can’t tell him. 

‘You can’t take control of his his bank account, you can’t control what I’m saying on Twitter but a lot of what was sending me into the episodes and it’s hard.

Kanye explained: ‘My wife took me to do that because she said: “Something about your personality doesn’t feel like it’s bipolar. I’ve seen bipolar before”

‘My dad and a bunch of people said “You can’t leave Adidas. Why would you leave all that money?”

‘But the constant feeling of not being in control spun me out of control’. 

Asked whether he knows when he is entering an episode, Kanye explained: ‘I watched for it beforehand but other times it was like you get to the point where you’re going to stay in that position for for a while. 

WHAT IS BIPOLAR?

Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder which causes unusual and often sudden changes in mood and energy levels.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? 

Moods of those with bipolar disorder range from periods of extreme elation and energy (known as a manic episode) to periods of extreme somberness and lack of energy (known as a depressive episode).

HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?

According to the International Bipolar Foundation, sufferers are diagnosed with rapid cycling if they have four or more manic, hypomanic, or depressive episodes in any 12-month period.

This severe form of the condition occurs in around 10 to 20 percent of all people with bipolar disorder.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

Currently it is unknown what is the cause of bipolar disorder, which affects around 5.7 million US adults aged 18 or older.   

Scientists say genetics could play a role or that those with a a family history of bipolar disorder are more likely to have it.

‘It might go for three days, four days, a week. Some people if they get into it you’ve got to put them in a place that’s not in public, it depends on the level of what it is.’

Later in the episode Kanye also confirmed he isn’t taking medication any more as he admitted: ‘I haven’t taken the medication since I found out that it wasn’t bipolar and that it wasn’t the right diagnosis and I found out it was autism. 

‘It’s finding stuff that doesn’t block the creativity obviously that’s what I bring to the world you know it’s world.’

Kanye previously referenced his bipolar in his track Yikes where he sang: ‘That’s my bipolar shit, ni**a, what? That’s my superpower, ni**a,’West raps on the track, saying his condition, ain’t no disability. I’m a superhero! I’m a superhero!’

Back in 2020 Kanye sparked concern after announcing his decision to run for president via Twitter and taking part in a controversial Forbes.

In the piece, Kanye slammed Planned Parenthood as an organization run by ‘white supremacists to do the Devil’s work’, drawing widespread criticism online. 

TMZ claimed the father-of-four suffers from a serious bipolar episode around once a year, resulting in his decision-making being impacted. 

The site previously reported: ‘Kanye announced he’s running for president via Twitter over the weekend, and also did a rambling interview with Forbes … which drew harsh criticism, confusion and concern. 

‘Our sources say his family and those close to him are worried, but they believe things will stabilize as they have in the past. 

‘The problem here, is that Kanye’s proclamations are causing problems.’

They added: ‘She would have enjoyed the evening a lot more.’
