Lucy Boynton insists intimacy coordinators are ‘f**king vital in creating both a physically and emotionally safe set’ as the role takes centre stage in Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s bitter feud

Lucy Boynton has given insight into the role of on-set intimacy coordinators.

The Bohemian Rhapsody actress, 31, has called the job, which is at the centre of Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s explosive Hollywood feud, ‘f**king vital’.

Talking to DEFINED to promote her new role where she plays Ruth Ellis, who was hanged in 1955 for shooting her lover, David Blakely, in broad daylight, Lucy said she doesn’t know of any woman in her industry who has never felt sidelined, or physically and emotionally vulnerable on set.

‘It’s not just enough to be physically safe when you’re doing scenes of Sєxual and physical violence,’ she explained.

‘We prioritise [women’s] physical safety by absolute necessity [but] that doesn’t necessarily mean that the [wider] landscape has caught up. That’s where someone like the intimacy coordinator is f**king vital.’

Lucy went on to cite her own experience on the set of A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story. ‘When we did the scene where Ruth [character] has a miscarriage [many] people didn’t know how to handle the subject matter,’ she explained.

‘You can’t blame them for not having the emotional equipment to deal with it, so an intimacy coordinator is the vital piece in that puzzle, the bridge, the translator that has eyes on people and knows how to take care of that situation.’

‘The very fact that so many people have a sneering atтιтude towards intimacy coordinators, when one is requested, speaks volumes to gender bias.’

Whilst Lucy was hesitant to talk about her own experience of feeling unsafe on set, pointing out that the very fact that I’m hesitant to talk about it shows that it’s still in play,’ she was quick to praise the bravery of those who have spoken up.

‘I think there is a pressure not to say anything too negative, because commenting on it is seen as complaining,’ she said.

‘And complaining isn’t being a team player and it’s not appealing, and as we see in these conversations about Ruth’s likability, women still constantly face the expectation of having to be ‘appealing’.’

‘I have had far more positive experiences in this industry than I have had negative, but that is directly because of the women who have come before me, who kicked ‘appealing’ out the window and just spoke up. Who risked a lot, or everything, to speak out and make this a better industry.’

Lucy’s insight comes after a Hollywood intimacy coordinator weighed in on the bombshell video of Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni on The Ends It With Us set.

Lively and Baldoni’s legal battle has exploded since the actress accused him of Sєxual harᴀssment and a campaign to ‘destroy’ her reputation.

The actress, 37, sued her co-star months after the release of their box office hit based on Colleen Hoover’s novel, in which she pays Lily Bloom and Justin, 41, who directed the film, stars as her abusive partner, Ryle Kincaid.

Blake alleged in her lawsuit that Justin orchestrated a negative PR campaign to harm the star’s reputation in the media.

Justin counter-sued the actress and her husband Ryan Reynolds, 48, for $400million for allegedly trying to ‘destroy’ his reputation and sued the New York Times for defamation for $250million.

The actor has since released unedited footage from It Ends With Us, voice notes and text messages with Blake, and a website dedicated to defending himself against her Sєxual harᴀssment claims – prompting Blake and Ryan to file for a gag order.

An explosive video exclusively released by DailyMail.com last month showed all three takes of a dance scene between Lively and Baldoni – revealing the pair were on apparent great terms before the actress accused him of Sєxual harᴀssment.

Lively in turn hit back at the clip’s release, saying it proved that she was uncomfortable during the scene.

Mia Schachter, who did not work on It Ends With Us but has worked on Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry, HBO’s Insecure and FX’s American Crime Story gave her analysis to THR, and said she believes it proves that Baldoni did make Lively uncomfortable.

When asked what stood out to her about the scene, she said: ‘The first thing is that he is trying to kiss her, and they clearly haven’t discussed that ahead of time, and she keeps pulling away and clearly doesn’t want to do that.’

Adding there was ‘no kissing written into the scene’ (a script excerpt reads ‘EXT BAR – NIGHT. Lily and Ryle slow dance in the bar. Patrons around them drinking and watching sports. Completely in their own world’), Schacter said if an intimacy coordinator had been present, they would have stopped any kissing.

She says it was Baldoni’s responsibility to ask Lively what she thought of kissing in scene – but claims ‘he just went for it. She pulled away, and then he did it again.’

Schachter said his alleged failure to communicate that was ‘pretty damning, both as an actor and director.’

Schachter said she did not see the clip as ‘vindicating Baldoni’ and that if she were the coordinator onset she would have discussed what Lively was comfortable with and what Baldoni wanted as director so the pair were ‘not caught off guard.’

A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story can be seen on and Britbox 17 February, and ITV 2 March
