The 1% Club fans clash over ‘outrageous and badly worded’ question for leading contestants astray – but can you solve it?

Fans of The 1% Club have clashed over a question, with some claiming it lead contestants astray.

A new episode of the popular quiz show, hosted by Lee Mack, 56, aired on Saturday evening but left some viewers confused.

The ITV programme sees 100 hopefuls answer questions that were put to the public, with the percentage who got it right determining its difficulty in each round.

On the recent instalment, a question that only 5% of the population were able to answer was read to the remaining five contestants, who had made it through the various rounds.

It read: ‘Without reordering any letters, how many animals appear in the sequence below?’ The sequence was, ‘PHEASANTORTOISEALION’.

All five remaining contestants answered it incorrectly and were knocked out of the round. But because they were the only participants left, they went through to the final question.

The answer was six, listing pheasant, tortoise, sealion, lion, seal and ant as the animals.

However, some viewers were left divided online and debated whether an ant is classed as an animal.

One posted on X: ‘#The1PercentClub an ant is NOT an animal! Outrage!’

Another said: ‘Pheasant is a bird, ant is an insect, seal and sealion are mammals, so the correct answer should be 2 (lion and tortoise). If the question was ‘how many creatures…’ then it’s 6. Bad question wording #The1PercentClub.’

While a third penned: ‘To all those saying otherwise. Yes an ant is an animal. All insects are. #The1PercentClub.’

A fourth chimed in: ‘The amount of people on the hashtag saying an ant isn’t an animal… #The1PercentClub.’

In the same episode, fans slammed the show’s final question as ‘the easiest ever,’ after a string of contestants got it wrong, leaving them empty-handed.

Aptly the final question is one that just 1% of the public were able to answer, and this week, five contestants made it to that fateful moment.

The players were faced with a choice – take home a share of £10,000 (£2,000 each), or answer the final question for the chance to win a prize pot of £96,000.

Only one player decided to take their share, Christopher, who said he felt his luck might run out, while the other four played on.

But only one contestant chose to answer the question, and got it wrong, meaning no one walked away with any cash.

The question was: ‘The words below share a specific pattern. Why could VOTING also be part of the group?’, and the words listed were ‘Bandleader, Nickelodeon and Silverback.’

It was then revealed that the three words all contained names of metals: Lead, Nickel, Silver and Tin, and viewers were to quick to slam the ‘easy question’ for featuring in the final round.

Out of the four who chose to face the coveted final question, only one was brave enough to answer, and he got it wrong, meaning no one walked away with any cash

Posts on X included: ‘That seemed a pretty easy 1% Question to me?!’

‘That was the easiest 1% question I can remember. Thought it must be wrong as it couldn’t be that easy. Amazed not one of them had a clue;’

‘Got this within five seconds was far too easy with silver and nickel as the start of the words and tin being the only other word in voting;’

‘My 12-year-old got this. Metals in the words.’
