Dog Man fans were panting for a big screen adventure and they got it. 

The animated adventure based on the popular children’s book series was top dog at the box office, handily beating the compeтιтion over the weekend, digging up $36 million from showings in more than 3,800 theaters across the US. 

Pete Davidson provided the voice for the evil Petey the cat, who declares war on the police officer who is half-man, half-dog in the film from the world of Captain Underpants. 

Other Saturday Night Live alum, including Melissa Villasenor, Cheri Otari, and Lorraine Newman provided voices for the film which has received a solid 76-percent rating from the critics at Rotten Tomatoes and a CinemaScore of A, according to Variety. 

‘I’m a huge Dav Pilkey fan,’ Davidson, 31, told CBS ‘I grew up reading all the Captain Underpants books. My mom got them for me. All the young kids in my family, they all read Dog Man, they’re obsessed with Dog Man,’ he said.

‘Right around the time I started noticing that, we got the offer,’ the actor said.

Coming in a distant second was newcomer Companion. Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid star in the psychological thriller about a group of friends who go for a weekend trip to a late billionaire’s cabin in the woods, where they discover one of their party is a companion robot. 

The dark comedy earned $9.5 million at US the box office after opening in nearly 3,300 theaters, and made another $5.5 million internationally for an debut weekend worth a total of $15 million, covering its $10 production budget.

The film has received good reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a 94-percent score from the critics and a 91-percent rating from audiences. 

Mufasa: The Lion King dropped to third place, but is still a winner with audiences after seven weeks in theaters, this week earning slightly more than $6.1 million. 

The Keke Palmer, SZA comedy One of Them Days dropped to fourth place, earning an even $6 million over the weekend. 

The comedy about a couple of best friends trying to recover their rent money from one of their boyfriends before they are evicted has been a hit with critics and audiences alike.  

Flight Risk experienced a rapid decent to fifth place. The crime thriller starring Mark Wahlberg as an ᴀssᴀssin hired to kill the man Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery’s US Marshall is ᴀssigned to transport via a small plane across the wilds of Alaska.    

The Mel Gibson directed adventure received a 26-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and after debuting at number one with $11.6 million in ticket sales, it plummeted, earning less than half that amount, $5.6 million over the weekend.

A Complete Unknown starring Timothée Chalamet as rock legend Bob Dylan remained in eighth place with $2.16 million in earnings.  

The Oscar nominated biopic has been well received by moviegoers, receiving a score of 96 on Rotten Tomatoes, but has not made great inroads, perhaps because it is being shown in only 1,500 theaters across the US.

The Brutalist, starring Adrien Brody as a visionary architect who escapes post WWII Europe for a life in the US was in ninth place with $1.86 million.

The drama has received 10 Academy Award nominations, which could explain its slight bump up from last week’s 10th place. 

Switching places with The Brutalist was Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, which rounded out the top 10.

The crime thriller starring Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. maneuvering their way the high danger, high reward world stealing diamonds earned $1.6 million over the weekend.
