Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal re-create iconic When Harry Met Sally scene for Super Bowl spot with Sydney Sweeney

On Wednesday, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal recreated an iconic scene from When Harry Met Sally… for a Hellmann’s commercial set to air during Super Bowl LIX happening February 9 on Fox, Tubi, and NFL+.

It’s been 36 years since the pair originated the roles of Sally Albright and Harry Burns in Rob Reiner’s beloved rom-com penned by Nora Ephron, which earned rave reviews and $92.8M at the global box office.

In the 60-second spot, the 63-year-old rom-com queen and the 76-year-old legendary comedian returned to Katz’s Deli in Manhattan’s Lower East Side to dine on sandwiches.

‘I can’t believe they let us back in this place,’ Billy marveled.

Meg replied: ‘Why? Nobody remembers that.’

Ryan (born Margaret Hyra) realized she forgot to put Hellmann’s mayonnaise on her sandwich, and once she does she begins to make noises in pleasure.

‘What’s happening? Oh boy, here we go,’ Crystal responded.

The Connecticut-born blonde then began moaning and pounding on the table just like she did in the film when she attempted to prove that women can fake orgasms.

‘This one’s real,’ the SNL veteran wisecracked.

Meg agreed: ‘Now that is a sandwich.’

The camera then cut to Immaculate bombshell Sydney Sweeney, who uttered the line made famous Rob Reiner’s mother Estelle: ‘I’ll have what she’s having.’

The funny line is ranked 33rd on the American Film Insтιтute’s list of the Top 100 movie quotations.

Back in 2013, Billy revealed that it was Ryan herself who came up with her iconic scene during rehearsals for When Harry Met Sally…

‘Meg said, “I should fake one. I should fake it in a public place.” And I said, “Yeah, like a restaurant with a lot of people,” Crystal recalled on TODAY.

‘And she said, “I’ll give a huge one.” And I said, “And then there should be an older woman who says, “Waiter, I’ll have what she’s having.”‘

The buzz for the advert began on January 22 when the SAG Award nominee posted a snap of the pair captioned: ‘It’s finally happening, we’re reuniting for something iconic. Can’t wait to show you all soon.’

Hellmann’s shelled out at least $14M – not including Meg and Billy’s salaries – to pay for the 60-second commercial, and Fox Corp. sold out of slots of commercial inventory back in August – according to Variety.

Crystal told People on Wednesday that the on-set reunion ‘felt the same’ as it did three decades earlier.

‘It’s the first time that we’ve been offered something like that,’ the six-time Emmy winner told the mag.

‘It was a really fun idea, and the approach was right.’

Ryan added: ‘They were so respectful of the movie and of the scene too. They came to us with just an enormous amount of respect for that, for the source material and for the characters.’

The talented twosome both agreed that the 27-year-old Emmy nominee was ‘adorable’ when they worked with her on the commercial.

‘That’s a big deal. It’s an iconic line and it’s a big honor to get to do that. And a heavy burden,’ Billy noted.

Meg added: ‘It was game and fun and loose and ballsy and just seemed to be having a blast while she was there.’
