BBC stalwart quits broadcaster after a whopping 38 years on screens – confirming exit with immediate effect

BBC star Paul Clifton has quit the channel after a whopping 38 years on our screens. 

The journalist joined the broadcaster in 1997 and has had a very successful career over the years. 

Paul is best known for being the Transport Correspondent for the Beeb in the south of the country. 

But after nearly four decades on our screens, the reporter’s last feature will be on our screens on Wednesday evening.  

Paul wrote on X: ‘Big moment for me: after 38 years, my final day at the BBC. 

‘I’ve spent more than half my life as transport correspondent, and it has rarely felt like working.

‘Travelled the world, won the prizes, worked with the best in the business, met amazing people.

‘But now I’m off.’ 

Many rushed to his tweet to reply with kind words and well wishes.

One said: ‘That is the end of an era Paul! Thank you for covering transport in such a professional and objective way. You are a class act.’

Another added: ‘Good luck Paul – you were a fantastic transport correspondent. I’ll miss your coverage of the sector.’

A third chimed in: ‘Best of luck Paul. My wife and will miss seeing you grace a wind and rain swept station platform and saying, “I see Paul has drawn the short straw again”. It’s been a pleasure watching you for all those years.’ 

‘Best wishes Paul, grew up watching your reports on South Today – feels like we’re losing a local legend!,’ a fourth tweeted. 

A fifth said: ‘Best of luck with the future, real shame the BBC are losing another transport reporter.

Another wrote: ‘Good luck for the future. It’s been great watching your reports.’

One asked: ‘Hopefully some kind of send off on BBC later? Where are you off to?’

To which Paul replied: ‘I’m taking voluntary redundancy. 

‘Everything else I do will continue.

 ‘I’m not disappearing; just disappearing from the telly! 

‘My last little feature is on tonight, partly filmed by my daughter: nice way to sign off. ‘

As well as working for the BBC, Paul’s work has appeared in various printed outlets. 

Some include RAIL magazine and RailReview.
