Antiques Roadshow guest’s eyes bulge as he learns value of ‘iconic’ Olympic torch – but he defiantly insists ‘I can’t accept’

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left lost for words when they found out the value of their Olympic torch.

A recent episode of the BBC show saw the experts gather at Pollark Park in Glasgow to inform people about the history behind their special items.

Journalist Gavin Bell went to ask expert valuer Jamie Russell about the torch that he used while taking part in the Olympic Games.

Jamie was absolutely amazed with the item and told Gavin: ‘Before I came here today to the Roadshow, I had a long list of items in my head that I thought I might see that would appear out of boxes and bags in front of me.

‘But one of them was definitely not an Olympic torch. I wonder if you can tell us how you came to own this.’

Gavin explained: ‘When I was a young lad, I was an 800 metres runner with a Glasgow club. So, of course, as a boy, I dreamed of running in the Olympics one day.

‘And then eventually, the dream came true in a way I’d never have expected.

‘I was posted to South Korea in advance of the 1988 Games for The Times.

‘And so while I was there, I met a couple of young English lads who’d been appointed to do the public relations for the torch relay.

‘And they found out about my athletic background and invited me to carry the torch on the first day it arrived in Korea.’

Jamie couldn’t contain his excitement over seeing the torch and told him just how much it is valued at.

The expert said: ‘I think if this were to come up at auction today, you could very safely ᴀssume an estimate of around £1,500 to £2,500.’

Gavin couldn’t believe his ears with what Jamie told him and replied: ‘Really?! Gee whizz!’

Jamie told the guest: ‘It’s such an iconic item.’

But Gavin made it clear he couldn’t get his hands on it and told him: ‘Well I can’t accept money for it!

‘I’m an amateur.’

Jamie was so impressed with the torch during the segment that he couldn’t stop complimenting it.

The expert said: ‘I mean, it’s fantastic.

‘And it’s really amazing to see one here in rainy Glasgow.

‘And what’s also great, as a valuer, is not only do we know from how it looks what it is but it tells us right here.

‘We know it was made, obviously, 1988, travelled from Olympia in Greece where the procession started and then all the way to the Olympic Stadium in Seoul where the flame was lit.

‘If we look at the actual object itself, it’s a really lovely piece of design.’

He explained the reason behind some of the designs of the torch.

Jamie said that dragons on the torch are used to ‘signify unity between the East and the West’.

It comes after another quest shared an incredible story behind her diamond ring – which was later given a huge valuation.

A woman on the US version of the show explained to expert Sarah Churgin that her father had bought her an engagement ring after she nearly drowned.

He bought the jewellery for $5,000, but she was later told that it’s worth around $70,000.
