Mexican movie Emilia Pérez has been slapped with brutal fan reviews, with critics branding it ‘the worst movie ever’.
After being lauded in Hollywood with an incredible 13 Oscar nominations, fans have bombarded social media with criticism.
Prior to awards season, the Netflix musical-thriller sparked mixed reviews since it released last year.
Despite its starring cast of Adriana Paz, Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon – who made Oscar history as the first openly trans actress to earn nomination – fans were still left unimpressed by the movie.
Following the announcement of the Oscar nominations on Thursday, fans took to X and shared their outrage at the many nods the movie received.
Some wrote: ’emilia perez getting an editing nomination over dune or challengers’,

‘I can’t even wrap my head around ‘Emilia Pérez’ getting THIRTEEN (13!!!) #Oscars nominations. Quite possibly the worst movie ever (mid-scores from audiences & critics) to get double digit nominations. Baffling’,
’emilia pérez and oppenheimer having the same amount of oscar nominations’,
‘This years best picture Oscar nominees just might be the nail in the Oscar coffin. I’ve never seen a worse batch of movies to be nominated…. Nothing to cheer for’,
’emilia perez getting 2 nominations for original song when they sound like they were translated on google by someone who has never heard a latino song in their lives’,
‘It breaks my heart because Zoe Saldana absolutely deserves Academy recognition… But not for THIS film. So many better films and performances she has, but they’re anchoring THIS movie to her in terms of best roles… Hell nah’,
‘Good lord, that’s even worse than an SNL skit. 13 nominations?!?!? Whatever’.
Karla and Zoe were nominated in the best lead actress and best supporting actress categories, respectively, but Selena was not among the nominees.
The film’s long list of other nominations includes nods for best picture, best international feature film, best director, best adapted screenplay, best film editing, best sound, best cinematography, best makeup and hairstyling, best original score and two nominations for best original song.

The movie is set in Mexico and tells the story of a lawyer who receives ‘an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel boss retire from his business and disappear forever by becoming the woman he’s always dreamed of being,’ according to an IMDb synopsis.
The film made waves earlier this year, winning the Jury Prize at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May, with the female ensemble snagging the Best Actress award.
Editor-in-Chief Nina Garcia gushed to guests at the premiere, ‘What a miracle of a movie this is,’ per an account from Elle.
‘It is surprising and moving and audacious, unlike anything I have ever seen. But, most of all, it is a complete original. As a fellow storyteller, I know this is the hardest thing to achieve, and when we do it well, it is the most satisfying.’
She added, ‘When I look around this room, I see the diversity within our community. You all bring such an incredible range of backgrounds and special talents. But I also see our unity.’
Selena also touched on the subject of community as she reflected in the magazine cover story: ‘The sisterhood ended up becoming what got us through. It’s still getting me through. I’m so glad that I’m not doing a bunch of scary things on my own.’
The chatter around Gomez’s role in the film is still going strong, but for now, it’s unclear if Emilia Perez is a hit or just a lot of hype.
