A Benidorm actor has revealed just how much they were paid to star in the hit ITV sitcom.

Asa Elliott, 43, played the role of a cabaret singer in the fifth series of the show at the infamous Solana H๏τel.

He appeared in six of the seven episodes and told The Sun how much he really took home for his months on end filming abroad.  

‘So in that series I appeared in six out of the seven episodes and I got paid quite a lot more than my first appearance, which was two years earlier in the Christmas special,’ he revealed.

‘For that, I got paid £750 – that was just for one scene.’

He continued: ‘When I went out for series five I was there for the long run for the whole series. So when I initially went to Spain to start filming, it was agreed I was going to get paid £4,000.’

However, he later shared that due to the show still being written at the time of filming, he ended up receiving £6,200 for six episodes which included travel, accommodation and food.   

2014 was not the last dealing Asa had with British sitcom Benidorm, as he starred in the stage adaptation of the show four years later, before it culminated in 2019.

However, his career came to a halt when the pandemic hit and in 2021, he revealed he had worked as an Asda delivery driver to supplement his income during lockdown.

Since then, work has picked up and the sitcom star is back performing on cruises.

Speaking to Hull Live in February 2022, the Mancunian said: ‘I got a job with my local shop in Kingswood doing deliveries for them and I helped out at the local vaccination centres as a volunteer steward.

‘I’m starting to go back onto the cruises now but things are still a bit ad-hoc and a bit last minute because of the changing restrictions around the world.’

He added: ‘Work picked up again when the UK holiday parks started opening last year and I did a few tours then, it was great because I think people needed it.’

Asa’s role in Benidorm came about from his time working in the Spanish resort itself, when he was spotted by the show’s creator Derren Litten, who invited him to audition.

Elsewhere, Benidorm creator Derren teased a return of the iconic Brits abroad sitcom in 2023.

The ITV show – which followed a group of holidaymakers in the Spanish resort and their hilarious escapades – came to an end in May 2018 after 11 years on our screens.

But Derren, 54, hinted that the show could return as he shared a tongue-in-cheek statement on X on Christmas Day.

He wrote: ‘I would like to take this opportunity to make a public statement.

‘It’s been a difficult decision but I’ve decided to return back to writing for both television and theatre.’

He added: ‘I have had clear, recent indications that certain TV channels are interested in my decision and I hope you will be watching the fruits of my labour in time to come.’

Derren then added a touch of humour as he signed off by saying: ‘Obviously there are always rumours surrounding such announcements but I would like to make it clear my decision to come out of retirement is purely to spend less time with my family.’

Derren also co-wrote The Catherine Tate Show, for which he both wrote and appeared as several different characters in the first two series and the 2005 Christmas Special.

Derren confirmed in 2018 that the long-running comedy had come to an end after 10 seasons, despite previously insisting the show would go on.

He wrote on Twitter at the time: ‘Yes folks it’s true, after months of speculation, I can finally confirm Benidorm series 10 was the LAST EVER TV SERIES of @BenidormTVshow.’

A source told The Sun at the time: ‘Benidorm’ has been a huge success for ITV for a decade, but bosses feel it’s run its course.

‘The ratings have started to drop off and a number of the fan favourites have left, so it just feels as though the time is right to let it go out while it’s still on a high.

‘It has been ITV’s longest running comedy, which is a real achievement.’
