Meanwhile former co-star Lisa Bowerman shared a statment from the late star’s family which paid tribute to the ‘old school’ actor.

It read: ‘It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father, Christopher Benjamin, at the age of 90, on the 10th of January’.

‘One of the few remaining “old school” actors he had a huge and extensive career spanning seventy years, encompᴀssing theatre, radio, TV and film. Beloved by all who knew him, one of his final stage appearances was as Falstaff in the Globe production of The Merry Wives of Windsor in 2010, where he led the company and created such a happy sense of Bonhomie for all that many who were there cite as the highlight of their career’.

‘Christopher’s love of acting started at Warminster school where he took part in school productions and excelled at acting, cricket and music, but not much else! He studied at RADA where he met his wife of 65 years Anna Fox. He has been a regular company member in the RSC over the years and will no double be fondly remebered for his bottom’.

‘He appeared in numbers iconic TV shows including The Avengers, The Prisoner, Doctor Who and The Forsythe Saga plus Sherlock Holmes, Midsummer Murders, Pride and Prejudice’.

It continued: ‘He also had a long running CD audio drama series based on the characters ‘Jago and Lightfoot’ after starring in Doctor Who from Tom Baker’s time. He leaves behind his wife Anna, three children Kate, Sebastian and Emilia and grandchildren Bertie, Madeleine and Sam,’

‘And of course his dearly beloved dog Minnie/ His love of  gardening, birds, cricket and of course music, art and theatre live on in them’.

Heartbroken fans rushed to the comments to pay tribute, writing: ‘How sad. I was lucky enough to see him in that Merry Wives of Windsor production, and am very glad that I did. Great actor who will be much missed RIP’.

It comes after Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has revealed that Rose Ayling-Ellis will be joining the cast for series two, in what he branded the show’s ‘scariest’ episode yet.

Speaking at a Q&A ahead of last year’s Christmas Special, Russell confirmed that Rose will be making a guest appearance in an ‘absolutely terrifying’ episode.

He said: ‘There is one thing, we finished an episode last Friday, I took it to show my sister, and she was literally on the edge of her seat.

‘We’ve got a story with Rose- Ayling Ellis in the lead… she’s the lead in one episode, which is stunning, isn’t it? I think it’s our scariest episode, it’s absolutely terrifying, but she’s magnificent, Ncuti with her and guest names in the cast are phenomenal.

‘So there’s great episodes to come, a big range of episodes, mad ones, scary ones, completely mad ones, good stuff to come.’

‘My inner child is ecstatic with excitement! Working with Russell and filming alongside the talented cast and crew has been an incredible experience. Ncuti is a wonderful Doctor, and I can’t wait for audiences to see what we have created together.’
