Jason Derulo says breaking his neck early in his career was ‘one of the darkest times of his life’ as he details suffering a ‘hangman’s break’

Jason Derulo has admitted breaking his neck in 2013 was one of the ‘darkest times of his life’ as he opened up about the ordeal which forced him to cancel his tour.

The singer, 35, revealed that whilst he was working a dance move for his Future History World Tour, he fell on his head and broke a vertebrae in his spine.

Speaking to Jamie Laing, 36, on the Great Company Podcast, Jason said that the fall left him with a ‘hangman’s break’ – which is the same break that occurs when a person is hung – and was left with no choice but to take a break for seven months.

Reflecting on the darkest time of his life, Jason told Jamie: ‘My darkest time was definitely when I broke my neck, that was for sure the darkest.’

He further explained: ‘So, I was preparing for my tour and I was working on these back tucks for stamina.’

‘So, we’re doing back-to-backs, we would stop for a while, take a break, and we’ll do like 20, back-to-back and I slipped on one and I bailed.’

The singer, 35, revealed that whilst he was working a dance move for his Future History World Tour, he fell on his head and broke a vertebrae in his spine

‘You’re never supposed to bail, even if you slip, you’re supposed to keep going. I bailed (and) fell on my head and I heard a crack and I was just like, oh s***.’

‘I felt a huge heat in my neck and I was just thinking in my head like damn, what just happened? Did my life just end?’

Jason, who was 24 at the time, revealed his mother dropped him off at rehearsals and was waiting for him in the car. However, she ended up driving him to the hospital.

Recalling how he was in ‘excruciating pain’ while his mother drove him to the hospital, he said: ‘I’m in excruciating pain, but I don’t want to let her know how bad my pain is.’

‘So I’m sitting in the pᴀssenger side and every single bump that she’s going on is like hell on earth, I’ve never felt so many bumps in my life.’

He added: ‘So (we) get to the hospital, and we have X-rays overnight, and the doctor comes and says “You have a hangman’s break,’

“Which is the same break that happens when you get hung and this could have been way worse, and you’re going to be down for seven months and kiss your tour goodbye.”

Jason also revealed that he struggled during his recovery and was unsure as to whether or not he could take several months off due to the fact he was in the early stages of his career.

Explaining how he had to cancel his tour, the Talk Dirty singer said: ‘So (I) had to cancel the entire tour and then I didn’t know what to make of the rest of my time.’

‘I didn’t know what the rest of my life was gonna look like. I didn’t know whether I could take that kind of time off.’

‘You know this was pretty early in my career. This was after my second album. So, my second album had two singles on there, Don’t Want To Go Home, and It Girl, which were nice hits, but they weren’t the biggest songs in the world.’

He added: ‘I didn’t know what the next vibe was going to be for me. And I was like, was this it? did I max out? And during that time, the seven months that I had, I created a routine for myself for me not to get down on myself.’

‘(I) would wake up in the morning, I would go and walk on the treadmill for 40 minutes, and then I would get home.’

‘Then when I got home, I would literally spend at least nine to 12 hours in the studio. After the nine to 12 hours in the studio, I would have my meal, and then I would go to bed, and I would start all over again every single day, the same routine every single day.’

Throughout his recovery, Jason spent hours in his studio writing Talk Dirty, which became the ‘most successful album’ of his career.

He further revealed: ‘And that’s when I made my most successful album, which had six platinum songs on it.’

The life-threatening injury forced Jason to cancel his tour, and he issued a statement to his fans at the time.

The statement read: ‘To all my fans who planned to come to the Future History World Tour, the pain of letting you down cuts me way deeper than this injury I’ve sustained.’

‘My fans mean everything to me, so I’m praying for a speedy recovery in order to perform for you in the near future.’
