Everyone is saying the same thing about this year’s Oscars after devastating LA fires

The nominations for the 2025 Oscars have been ‘further delayed’ amid the ᴅᴇᴀᴅly L.A. wildfires but the ceremony is still scheduled for March 2, and everybody is saying the same thing about the show.

Earlier this week on Monday, it was revealed that the voting period has been extended to January 17 – after previously being postponed to January 14.

The announcement of the nominations will now take place on January 23.

However, social media users have shared their thoughts on the event, and suggested that the ceremony itself be changed to a telethon fundraiser to help raise money for the victims of the fires that began last week.

As of Tuesday, the catastrophic blazes have destroyed over 12,000 structures with the death toll rising to 24. A number of residents and celebrities have lost their homes including Miles Teller, Paris Hilton, Billy Crystal and Anthony Hopkins.

Four members of the Academy’s board of governors as well as the former CEO additionally lost their houses in the fires, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Desperately Seeking Susan actress, Rosanna Arquette, 65, jumped to the app BlueSky to offer her own idea.

‘I’d love to see the Sag awards and Oscar and Grammys this year turn the shows into telethons to raise money for the community…’

‘The city of los angeles, for families who’ve lost their homes and pets and life’s memories and for our beloved fire fighters that have saved lives,’ she wrote.

Her followers agreed, with one penning, ‘How about the swag bags instead be usable gifts for those who lost homes or workplaces or jobs in those homes and workplaces!’

Another added, ‘There used to be telethons all the time when I was growing up. That’s a great idea! I was just thinking the other day why they stopped doing them.’

One follower applauded Arquette’s suggestion and added, ‘Couldn’t agree more. Great idea!’

Over on X, other social media users also expressed their opinions for the 97th Annual Academy Awards.

A fan wrote, ‘The Oscars have such a huge cultural impact – maybe they can lead the way in revitalizing the city. It’s all about innovation and community, right?’

During an interview with Variety, Rosanna expanded on her post and told the outlet, ‘This year, it’s not just about celebrating art. It’s about using art to rebuild, inspire and help those who need it most.’

The Whole Nine Yards star said, ‘I woke up the other night thinking, “What if we did a Jerry Lewis-style telethon but integrated it with the Oscars?”‘

‘Imagine Billy Crystal opening the show. He lost his home, but he’s the perfect person to unite the room, to remind us of what we can achieve together.’

She shared her vision of both nominees and presenters helping to raise funds in real time – while dressed casually rather than tuxedos and gowns.

‘Picture the best actor winner holding their Oscar in one hand and a cell phone in the other, taking donations from around the world. This could raise billions.’

Arquette – whose sister is fellow actress Patricia Arquette – continued, ‘Let’s have firefighters, teachers and community heroes on stage with the nominees. They’re the backbone of this city, and they deserve to be seen.’

The star then emphasized, ‘This isn’t about actors rebuilding their mansions. It’s about helping the people who can’t rebuild – those who’ve lost everything and don’t have the means to start over.’

While talking to Variety, Rosanna later added, ‘Art has always given people hope. Now, we can use it to rebuild lives and show what we’re capable of when we come together…’

On Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences delayed voting and the nominations announcement for a second time as fires continue to rage throughout Southern California.

However, firefighters have begun to obtain a larger containment of the flames, especially with the Pacific Palisades and Eaton Fires.

Chief executive Bill Kramer and Academy president Janet Yang shared in a statement: ‘We are devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community.’

‘The Academy has always been a unifying force within the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of hardship.’

‘Due to the still-active fires in the Los Angeles area, we feel it is necessary to extend our voting period and move the date of our nominations announcement to allow additional time for our members.’

The pair also expressed, ‘Our members always share how important it is for us to come together as a community, and we are determined to use this opportunity to celebrate our resilient and compᴀssionate industry.’

‘We also look forward to honoring our frontline workers who have aided with the fires, recognizing those impacted, and encouraging people to join the Academy in supporting the relief efforts.’

In conclusion, Kramer and Yang positively added, ‘We will get through this together and bring a sense of healing to our global film community.’

Last week on Wednesday, the Oscars nominations and voting period were both extended amid the L.A. fires.

The awards show will still be held at the Barker Hangar later this month, and hosted by Chelsea Handler.

The 67th Annual Grammy Awards are scheduled to go ahead on the original date of February 2 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

A statement was shared by both the Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. and the chair of the Academy’s board of trustees, Tammy Hurt.

They added, ‘This year’s show, however, will carry a renewed sense of purpose: raising additional funds to support wildfire relief efforts and honoring the bravery and dedication of first responders who risk their lives to protect ours.’

‘In challenging times, music has the power to heal, comfort, and unite like nothing else.’

‘The Grammys will not only honor the artistry and achievements of our music community but also serve as a platform to amplify the spirit of resilience that defines this great city of Los Angeles.’

The nominations for the 2025 ceremony were announced two months earlier in November, with Beyonce leading with the most nods.

The blazes in L.A. County have since destroyed around 12,000 structures – which include houses, schools and churches.

88,000 people are still under evacuation orders throughout Southern California, and L.A. mayor Karen Bᴀss issued an executive order on Monday to help rebuild homes at a quick pace, NBC reported.

Bᴀss – who has faced severe criticism amid the fires – said in a statement: ‘This order is the first step in clearing away red tape and bureaucracy to organize around urgency, common sense and compᴀssion.’

However, high winds are expected through Wednesday of this week – with gusts in some areas set to hit around 40mph.
