Christina Applegate reveals she doesn’t ‘leave the house anymore’ in heartbreaking health update

Christina Applegate has revealed she ‘doesn’t leave the house anymore’ in a heartbreaking new health update.

The 53-year-old Anchorman actress has been battling multiple sclerosis (MS) – a chronic, autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, since 2021.

She opened up on Tuesday on how she is doing currently during an appearance on Conan O’Brien’s show Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, alongside her podcast co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler.

Getting emotional, Christina quipped: ‘I don’t really leave the house anymore. If people saw what my life was like on the daily, they wouldn’t they wouldn’t be able to do it. Because I can sometimes not do it. It’s really, really hard.

‘The first thing that I hear from people is how did you get it? Meaning I must have done something wrong in my life to have this disease, I did it to myself. It’s like I had breast cancer as well so, oh you must have done something.’

She continued: ‘That stigma, I’m used to it now but it was so hard to swallow for a while because why the f*** would you think that I would do something to have this, because this is the worst thing I’ve ever had in my life.

‘It’s the worst thing I’ve ever gone through.’

The actress explained that on a bad day, ‘to go to the bathroom is like walking on needles and H๏τ lava so I haven’t really been able to get out of my bed today’.

She also lifted the lid on the symptoms she experienced, including numbness in her toes and losing her balance.

‘Eventually over months it went from my toes to my ankles to from my knees down. Selma Blair said can you please go to the neurogolist and I was like there’s no way that both of us from the same movie have MS.’

Christina added: ‘I was losing balance, but the pain was extraordinary. And when I say numb, it’s numb, but it hurts.’

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. It cannot currently be cured, but treatment can often help manage it.

Christina has previously revealed the shocking amount of times that she has been rushed to the hospital for an illness related to her multiple sclerosis.

On her MeSsy Podcast, she answered a fan question about her battle as she said: ‘For three years, since I was diagnosed, I’ve been in the hospital upwards of 30 times from throwing up and diarrhea and pain.

‘That is unimaginable, OK? They’ve done every test known to man on me, put so much radiation into my body from CT scans to everything else.’

Christina did reveal some positive news, however, as she said that she believes that she had figured out what the issue is within the last month.

As the fan asked about the vomiting and diarrhea from their battle with MS, the Married With Children actress replied: ‘Now, maybe this isn’t what’s happening, but I’m just going to tell you this. Talk to your doctor about motility issues, okay.

‘Because one of the things with MS is that it slows down our organs, you know, not like completely, but there is a slowing of the function of your organs.

‘I have noticed that — and I’m going to be really honest — if I have to poop, I puke.’

Christina also said that she was going to get a colonoscopy and said she brought the fan’s email to show the doctor.

She said: ‘My neuro doesn’t — God bless her — says that’s not an MS thing.

‘So, I’m sorry, there’s got to be a correlation here, and I’m not a doctor. I’m not giving medical advice. I’m just saying, just think about that, OK? Because I’m in the middle of the same exact situation, and it f***ing sucks, and it’s scary.’

Christina joked that her ‘favorite part’ of her MS battle is having diarrhea and vomiting simultaneously.

She said: ‘“Always have a little trash can next to your toilet. Because you can do both without it being messy. I had one yesterday.’

Christina also noticed the first signs of MS after ‘falling’ on her series ᴅᴇᴀᴅ To Me.

The actress recalled filming the pilot episode of the drama – which aired from 2019 to 2022 – which included a scene where her character Jen Harding was running across a field.

During an episode of her own ‘MeSsy’ podcast with Sigler, she told ᴅᴇᴀᴅ To Me director Liz Feldman: ‘I remember falling that day. Hi, first sign of MS! So, not to bring everybody down, but there I was.’

Liz recalled: ‘I remember you losing your balance when we were shooting the pilot a couple of times. It was very hard to figure it out because, you know, I remember one time, it was really late at night.

‘We’d been shooting probably 14 or 15 hours … It seemed completely reasonable that anybody would be collapsing.’

Christina confirmed: ‘It was MS.’

The new podcast interview comes just after Christina revealed last month that her father Robert ‘Bobby’ Applegate has died at the age of 82.

She broke down in tears when she shared the heartbreaking news on her podcast.

She told guest JoAnna Garcia Swisher that she was crying because her father pᴀssed away about a week before they were recording their podcast session.

Christina added that this was the first time she had shed tears over the pᴀssing of her dad because she had held it in.

‘We knew he was going to die. Is that an excuse for not feeling?’ she asked.

‘Because you kind of know that someone’s going to go, and you’ve said your goodbyes,’ added the longtime actress.
