Tommy Fury admitted ‘2024 was the worst year of my life’ and described how he spent ‘a long time on a dark path’ in an unflinching Good Morning Britain interview.
The boxer, 26, appeared on the ITV show on Wednesday morning and opened up about his recent struggles ahead of his sporting comeback on Friday to hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls.
Last year, Tommy had surgery after secretly battling with a hand injury for some time.
He is now set to return to the ring after last fighting in October 2023 when he defeated KSI.
The Love Island star also had to grapple with splitting from his fiancée Molly-Mae Hague last August amid Tommy’s struggles with alcohol, which he said led to him getting ‘black-out drunk’ most nights and neglecting his responsibilities.
While co-parenting their daughter Bambi, the pair gradually started dating again.

During his Good Morning Britain interview, Tommy reflected on his break from boxing and return to the ring: ‘I think it’s been easier this time to get back in shape mentally and physically because the two years out of the ring I wasn’t in shape mentally or physically again.’

‘Ever since that, I’ve just wanted so much to get back in shape in both ways, so I’ve been in shape for a long, long time, mentally and physically and I’m just ready ahead of Friday.
‘It’s the first fight back, there’s going to be cobwebs there, there’s going to be nerves but that’s all going to get blown off inside the first round.’
Susanna went on to ask him about his reconstructive surgery and the ‘absolutely dreadful year’ he and and said: ‘It was 2024 and you described it as the worst year of your life.
‘You turned to drink and you kind of had, I suppose I’d be right in saying, a breakdown?
‘Can you just explain, how that happened, going from intense, all achieving, high octane moment in the sun led to this dreadful year and how you’ve managed to get over it?’
Tommy opened up about his recovery and how he got himself out of a ‘dark place’.
He said: ‘Ever since I’ve been small from 5,6,7,8, all I’ve ever done is boxed, I’ve never had another job outside of boxing. I’ve always thought, breathed and done everything boxing.

‘When you do that for such a long time and then all of a sudden you’re sat in a hospital bed and you’re thinking to the future of a year down the line, you’re thinking to yourself, I’ve never done anything else other than box, what am I going to do to pᴀss the time?’ How am I going to get through this, you fall into a dark place.’

‘Being in a position where boxing is everything, the fact I couldn’t do that and get out of bed in the morning and do what I wanted to do to make me happy, I just thought sod it all.
‘You go down that dark route and you go down there for a few weeks and you end up staying there for a very long time and that has consequences.’
Tommy admitted: ‘2024 was the worst year of my life and this year’s going to be the best year of my life, it starts on Friday, I’ve turned it all around.
‘I’m happy mentally now, I’ve got to go through these challenges in life. Everyone’s got a hard life.
‘I’ve come through this, I’m on the other side and I’m back doing what I do best.’
The boxer paid a touching tribute to her young daughter Bambi and revealed: ‘I speak to Bambi all the time, she’s everything to me, I love her so much.

Molly and Tommy met on ITV2 dating show Love Island in 2019, where they fell for each other in front of the nation.
They welcomed daughter Bambi in January 2023, before getting engaged just a few months later.
But fans were shocked when Molly announced on Instagram last August that she and Tommy had split up after five years, with many suspecting he had been unfaithful.
In a statement posted to her 8.5million Instagram followers, Molly confirmed the breakup, saying: ‘I never imagined our story would end, especially not this way.’
Tommy denied continued speculation about him cheating during a magazine interview, insisting any reports about him being with other women were ‘complete and utter b*****ks.’

The boxer, who’s the half-brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, said the reason he and Molly ended their romance was down to his excessive drinking.
He said: ‘People go through different things in life. I’m 25 years old. I went through a lot and my breakup was in front of the whole world…
‘Cheating was never a thing. You can ask Molly this yourself. It was the drink, and the drink is not a good thing.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and STV and streams on ITVX and STV Player.
