Ryan Reynolds compares watching Wrexham to a ‘giant pile of cocaine’ – after the Welsh football team which he co-owns with Rob McElhenney secured historic promotion

Ryan Reynolds has compared watching his Wrexham side to a ‘giant pile of cocaine’ after the Welsh football team secured a historic promotion to the Championship.

The Hollywood icon, 48, took over the struggling outfit along with fellow actor Rob McElhenney in 2021 in a move which shocked the sport.

They have since guided the club, the third oldest in the world, to an unprecedented three promotions in a row, including the most recent success wrapped up last month.

And reflecting on star striker Sam Smith’s acrobatic goal against Charlton, which sealed their latest glory, Ryan revealed that watching Wrexham is like a drug of its own.

He told the Daily Star: ‘Well, I have not required an adult diaper yet. I think I’ve watched Sam Smith’s martial arts/judo kick maybe 50, 60, 70 times.

‘It’s my version of a gigantic pile of cocaine. I’m just sitting there, watching that over and over and over again and enjoying every second of it. It is remarkable.

‘I’m glad it happened when we are at the age I’m at. Because I don’t think this is something I would have been able to handle any younger. I wouldn’t change anything about my time here. I don’t know how you get bored with something like this.’

The ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool actor compared the rejection in football to that of his own profession, expressing regret when a player or member of staff at Wrexham has to move on.

He explained that he and Rob pride themselves on being welcoming to players, but that this relationship has not gone unexploited, with one star calling Ryan to ask for help on renting a car.

Their kindness towards opposition teams has also come under scrutiny, particularly from Shaun Harvey, the club director, who once banned them from wishing ‘good luck’ to rival players before each match.

It comes after the Mail revealed that Ryan and wife Blake Lively, 37, are shopping for a ‘lock up and leave’ apartment in Mayfair.

The couple reportedly considered buying a £1.5million ($2million) home in Wrexham when Reynolds first bought a stake in the club in 2021.

But they aren’t thought to have signed on the dotted line, and currently stay at Carden Park H๏τel when, as happened last week, they make a flying visit.

Now, they’ve decided that, for reasons of privacy and security, they’d rather have a place in London and take a helicopter to Wales.

Estate agents say they’re looking in the ‘platinum triangle’ of Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Belgravia with a budget of around £3.7million ($5million).

While searching for a property in London, Ryan and Blake also been secretly building another sprawling home in New York.

Amid their major projects, the duo were back in north Wales over the weekend, where they watched the star’s beloved Wrexham secure promotion.

Jubilant fans stormed the pitch at full-time, with co-owners Ryan and Rob pictured lifting the League One Trophy together.

Blake took pH๏τos with supporters before the match kicked-off and celebrated with her spouse afterwards.

She also posed for pictures with her husband post-match, with the couple looking smitten in the stands at the Racecourse.

Ryan’s time in north Wales has come with much fan fair, and after the game he took to Instagram to call Wrexham his ‘home’.

‘This club is the sum of its supporters. Before we showed up they’d saved it multiple times. It’s a temple as much as a football pitch,’ he gushed.
