The One Show’s Alex Jones fights back tears as guest reads out heart-wrenching letter from her late father – with a ‘moving’ twist

The One Show’s Alex Jones fought back tears last night as a guest read out a heart-wrenching letter from her late father – which had a ‘moving’ twist.

The host of the hit BBC chat show found herself welling up during last night’s episode, an hour-long special in honour of the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday.

One segment of the programme commemorating the end of World War Two saw Alex and co-host Roman Kemp welcome a woman named Eirwen into the studio.

While Eirwen’s mother was pregnant with her in 1944, her father Lloyd was serving in the Royal Artillery.

At the time, Lloyd wrote a heartbreaking letter to his wife in case he pᴀssed away at war – and Eirwen read out live on-air his devastating words, around 80 years later.

She began, alongside a montage of pH๏τos of her parents: ‘This seems a very strange letter to write. There seems to be so much I’m needed for.

‘Firstly, of course, you – because you, my angel, are always first in my thoughts and when I do go into battle, it will be with your name on my lips and your memory inspiring me to fight.

‘Then, there is Eirwen. I do so much want to see the child and be a real father.

‘Although there are many miles between us physically, I feel that you are straining every nerve to be near me in spirit.

‘I need you my sweetheart and I am just an ordinary chap but I am going in there with the gloves on.

‘Don’t grieve for me, my darlingest, but look after Eirwen and bring the child up to be as fine a person as its mother.’

Tearfully, Eirwen concluded her reading: ‘So, sweetheart, for the last time, I will say goodnight my darling, be good and God bless you.’

Alex was left nearly in tears by the emotional letter and reached out to give Eirwen a comforting touch on the knee.

The presenter said: ‘Thank you, thank you for sharing that, that was… I mean, it’s so moving, isn’t it?’

Roman agreed: ‘Eirwen, thank you so much for sharing that. It is such a moving letter.’

But then, he revealed to enraptured viewers a moving twist to Eirwen’s family story: ‘Many soldiers obviously didn’t return, but there is good news.’

The co-presenters then disclosed that despite Eirwen’s father expecting he was going to die and writing a letter in case he did, he actually survived the war.

Alongside his letter to his wife, he went on to write Eirwen her very own letter, after she was born.

Roman explained Eirwen’s appearance on the show was part of a collaborative project between the BBC and the Imperial War Museum.

The initiative aims, he explained on-air, ‘to tell your VE Day stories by asking people to share their World War Two letters written by loved ones’.

Eirwen has shared the letter her father wrote her after she was born with the museum.

Elsewhere in the weeknight programme, veteran BBC presenter Sophie Raworth outlined the week’s news.

Comedian and war history enthusiast Al Murray also interviewed the UK’s oldest surviving World War Two veteran, an 110-year-old man named Donald Rose.

Donald is a recipient of France’s highest award, named the French Legion of Honour, and survived being sH๏τ in the leg during the D-Day Landings in 1944.

Meanwhile, presenter and actor Brian Conley visited the historic Gorleston Pavilion Theatre in Norfolk, which is set to host an evening of music and dance this Thursday to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

It comes after This Morning viewers were concerned for guests on the show yesterday during the programme’s own VE Day special episode.

Monday’s instalment of the ITV daytime show featured Rylan Clark, 36, and Emma Willis, 49, stepping in for the usual presenters, Ben Shephard, 50, and Cat Deeley, 48.

The pair were presenting from outside the ITV studio and to commemorate VE Day, Rylan and Emma sat down with veterans who witnessed the event 80 years ago.

Surrounding the outdoor set-up was a celebratory street party and singers.

But some viewers were concerned about the warmth of the elderly veterans on the show after the weather had cooled down since last week.

Many posted on X: ‘Everybody looks freezing, why don’t they just take it inside #thismorning.’

‘They could have put these poor people indoors #thismorning.’

‘#thismorning any reason why this couldn’t have been done inside the studio, they look b***** freezing.’

‘I’m freezing sitting in the house #thismorning.’

‘The wind seems to be going up a gear since the start of the show.’

‘Maybe they should’ve done this interview in the studio #thismorning,’ someone else penned, followed by a cold emoji.

During the episode, it began to rain and people were moved indoors to warm up.

Emma explained: ‘We’ve sent them inside for tea and cake.’

The One Show is available to watch on Mondays at 7pm on BBC One and to stream on iPlayer.
