Netflix fans overjoyed as streamer announces major change which will ‘transform’ every single hit series – raving ‘finally a win!’

Netflix has announced a major change which will ‘transform’ every single hit series, to the delight of fans, who are raving it is ‘finally a win!’

Many viewers watch with subтιтles, a study showed – but find it irritating when the captions describe sound effects or music as well as showing the dialogue.

It means keen streamers were delighted to discover that an update to the service sees subтιтles show just the words spoken – and nothing else, the Express reports.

The previous comprehensive closed captioning is mainly for deaf or hearing-impaired people, who account for only a small portion of total subscribers, the study showed.

These viewers, who might appreciate the extra description, need not worry – this traditional closed captioning will still be available, listed as ‘English CC’, alongside the new style, named ‘English’ or whatever the viewer’s preferred language.

There is also a range of other options for personalisation, including more settings for text font, weight, opacity, outline and shadow to help with contrast – and options to move the position of subтιтles on-screen to avoid covering important action.

The new adaptation was rolled out on the fifth and final season of You, released last Thursday, and Netflix plans to add it to all its original shows from now on.

Early testers reported a smoother reading experience, Netflix said, saying it was less ‘obtrusive’ – and fans have now also taken to social media to express their delight at the new feature.

One user said on X: ‘Finally, a win for subтιтle lovers! No more getting distracted by every door creak and ominous music cue.

‘Netflix is stepping up its caption game with a cleaner, more streamlined experience. Less chaos, more clarity.’

All these new features can also be accessed quickly from the playback menu, without having to exit your favourite show to fiddle with complex settings options.

Another said: ‘Netflix is finally silencing those annoying [DOOR CREAKS] and [OMINOUS MUSIC INTENSIFIES] subтιтles with a sleek new caption option that shows only what characters actually say…

‘No more reading about background noises when you’re just trying to catch the dialogue.’

They praised the streamer for trading in ‘full sensory overload’ for ‘cleaner subтιтles’: ‘After years of viewer complaints about cluttered captions describing every sigh, gasp and musical swell, Netflix finally realised sometimes less is more.

‘Your subтιтle reading experience just got a whole lot less [CHAOTIC].’

Someone else added: ‘Netflix finally figured out less is more – about time.’

Another said: ‘I’m so glad Netflix is simplifying subтιтles now, it’s much better for watching shows!’

It is another win for Netflix after fans were captivated last week by a British crime thriller that has just hit the platform.

Three-part series Black Work first aired in 2015 on ITV – but is proving to be a hit with a new set of viewers, who said it ‘gives them chills’ and have even compared it to Vera and Black Mirror.

Starring Sheridan Smith, Matthew McNulty and Oliver Woollford, the drama was created by Bridge of Spies writer Matt Charman.

Black Work delves into the story of a widowed police officer PC Jo Gillespie, played by Sheridan, who takes things into her own hands and investigates her husband’s (Kenny Doughty) death – quickly discovering secrets from his undercover work.

Despite being added to the streamer only recently, it has rocketed up the charts on Netflix.

Many viewers penned their reviews on Google: ‘ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS ON ITV, Very good and breathtaking storyline, every time I hear its soundtrack and scenes where they filmed at the Leeds shopping centre, I always get the chills.’

‘Awesome show, it has a mixture of Vera and DCI Banks with the crime scenes of forensic analysts and modus operandi, it has to be the best shows on TV, Especially on ITV, the British are the best at crime procedurals like this, it’s breathtaking.’

‘Superbly done, detective fiction thriller in the style of the French Connection and Black Mirror.’
