Lily Allen apologises for ‘being mean’ to Katy Perry about Blue Origin space flight as she admits it was ‘her own internalised misogyny’

Lily Allen has apologised for ‘being mean’ to Katy Perry about the Blue Origin space flight and admitted it was ‘her own internalised misogyny’.

The 39-year-old singer joined the chorus criticising the Firework hitmaker and the all-female crew – which included broadcaster Gayle King and Jeff Bezos’ fiancee Lauren Sanchez – for their brief trip into orbit earlier this month.

However, she has now publicly backtracked and expressed regret for comments, admitting ‘there was no need to pile on’.

Speaking on her Miss Me? podcast on Monday, Lily said: ‘I would actually like to apologise for being mean about Katy Perry last week.

‘There was actually no need for me to bring her name into it, and it was my own internalised misogyny.’

‘I’ve been thinking about it a lot and it was just completely unnecessary to pile on with her. And I disagree with what it was that they did but she wasn’t the only person that did it.’

She explained: ‘Yet she was possibly the most famous and the one that, you know, it divides people the most, so I dunno. There was something in me that decided to choose her as the person that should…

‘Anyway, I’m just sorry. I would have been hurt if it had been me and someone in my industry used me and my name and I saw that and I’m sorry Katy Perry. I know you don’t listen to the show but yeah, sorry.’

Her co-host Miquita Oliver then responded: ‘I’m really happy you said that.’

Lily had previously singled out the artist in her damning criticism of the space voyage.

The Smile hitmaker said recently: ‘Do we want to talk about Katy Perry and her mates all going up to space for 12 minutes? I mean, what the f****** hell is that all about? But in all seriousness: What? Why?’

She added: ‘We’re on the brink of recession, people are really f****** struggling to make ends meet and get food on their table.’

However, the star now has a different outlook on the matter and expressed her regret at specifically targeting Katy.

Lily isn’t the only star to express her disapproval of the Blue Origin space flight after model and actress Emily Ratajkowski branded it as ‘beyond parody’.

In a TikTok video, she ranted: ‘That space mission this morning? That’s end time s***. Like, this is beyond parody.

‘Saying that you care about Mother Earth and it’s about Mother Earth, and you’re going up in a spaceship that is built and paid for by a company that’s singlehandedly destroying the planet?

‘Look at the state of the world and think about how many resources went into putting these women into space. For what? What was the marketing there?

‘And then to try to make it like… I’m disgusted. Literally, I’m disgusted.’

However, it’s not the first time Lily has ʙuттed heads with Katy.

The Fireworks singer once described herself as a ‘skinnier version’ of Lily, prompting the English star to clap back.

In a 2008 interview on Capital FM, fiery Lily described meeting Katy for the first time as ‘frosty’ – and took a swipe at her musical abilities.

Lily said: ‘I happen to know for a fact that she was an American version of me.

‘She was signed by my label in America as, “We need to find something controversial and kooky like Lily Allen”. ‘And then they found her. I think the lyrics and stuff are a bit crᴀss.’

Lily added: ‘When I met her I was bit frosty with her because someone asked her to describe herself.

‘She’s like, “Aha, I’m like a fatter version of Amy Winehouse and a skinnier version of Lily Allen!”. It’s like, you’re not English and you don’t write your own songs, shut up!’

Katy later called a truce in her simmering feud with her fellow pop star.

She apologised to Lily for her remarks, saying at the taping of Fuse’s The Good, the Bad & the Britney: ‘Yeah, I made a joke about that earlier this year.

‘I was just kind of joking and trying to be funny. I didn’t mean anything by it. Comedians are not necessarily to be taken super seriously.’

Lily has also clashed with the likes of Miriam Margolyes, Azealia Banks, Victoria Beckham, and Courtney Love, as well as her notorious feud with Cheryl which spanned over 12 years.
