The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been branded a ‘disgrace’ after six musical icons were snubbed from the Class of 2025.
Mariah Carey, Phish, Oasis, Billy Idol, Joy Division + New Order and Mexican pop rock band Maná did not convince voters to select them for this year’s class.
The six music legends all appeared on a ballot for the 2025 hall of fame but did not receive enough votes to be inducted.
Voters – who consist of 1,200 industry professionals who are invited to cast a ballot – did select Cyndi Lauper, the White Stripes, Chubby Checker, Outkast, Bad Company, Soundgarden, and Joe Cocker for this year’s class.
Netizens were particularly displeased to see that the victors of a 2025 hall of fame fan vote – which was won by Phish with Billy Idol coming in third – failed to get inducted.
While the results of the fan vote really plays no role in determining the inductees, that didn’t stop X users from slamming the organization for failing to take their voices into account.
‘@BillyIdol and @Stevestevens had the 3rd highest fan vote and they still don’t get in! INJUSTICE!!!! Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a shame !!! Respect LOST!!!’ one outraged X user posted.

Rock legend Billy Idol came in third in a fan vote but voters weren’t persuaded enough to select him for this year’s hall of fame
Phish won the fan vote but also failed to make the hall of fame
‘Seriously! No @phish??? They overwhelmingly won the fam(sic) vote!! WTF Rock Hall?!?!?!?’ another wrote.

‘Lol what a joke. When a band wins fan vote by that wide of a gap and then a group who wasn’t even on the ballot did? @rockhall is a joke.’
‘Why even have a fan vote if we can’t have the people we voted for in there… WE WANT @BillyIdol in the hall!!’
Another mirrored their sentiments: ‘Why do you even have the fan vote? You never listen to the fans. You do what you want regardless. Cleverlander here who has never and will never visit. There’s more non RnR in the hall than real rock…makes no sense,’ another posted.
‘So next year there is literally zero reason for fans to “vote.” We spoke, overwhelmingly, and the @rockhall told us to kiss off, leaving the overwhelming fan vote win ner out of the mix.’
‘Total disgrace,’ one posted. ‘Not renewing my membership.’
Variety has written that the fan vote is more an opportunity for listeners to ‘feel like they’re participating’.
The Rock Hall has previously explained that the final results of the fan vote counts as one ballot in the official hall of fame election, according to the outlet.

Mexican pop rock band Maná also will not be joining the hall of fame after failing to earn enough votes
Cyndi Lauper will be inducted into the 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
However, generally the results align with what the fans chose – Variety reports that the only time a fan winner did not become an inductee was in 2020 when the Dave Matthews Band failed to join the class. The band, however, was inducted in 2024.
This year Phish received 330,000 votes, followed by Bad Company with 281,000, and Billy Idol with 260,500.
Inductees Cyndi Lauper landed in fourth place with 237,000 of the fan vote, Joe Cocker got fifth with 234,000, Soundgarden landed at sixth with 233,000, Chubby Chucker received 203,000 and landed at seventh.
The White Stripes received 110,500, Joy Division + New Order got 120,500, and Outkast received 108,000.
Mariah Carey beat ou several inductees with 138,000 of the fan vote.
Her fanbase was also vocal in their displeasure.
‘not having Mariah Carey inducted yet it is a crime. YOU DON’T DESERVE HER!’ one posted.
The White Stripes were also voted into the Class of 2025
Netizens expressed their displeasure with the results in the replies of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s X post announcing the inductees
Fans were shocked to see Phish, who won the fan vote, failed to gain entry
The Mariah Carey fanbase also slammed the hall of fame for excluding the music icon
One poignantly pointed out that Carey’s hit track All I Want For Christmas Is You had been inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. ‘Mariah Carey has been inducted in the Library of Congress,’ they wrote.
‘Why do they keep snubbing Mariah Carey?’ one asked.
‘#mariahcarey STILL isn’t in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? A JOKE. Most #1s EVER. Vocal legend. Pop/R&B icon. Changed music forever. Yet 13 artists got in & they skipped her… AGAIN. #RockHall2025 is a disgrace!’ they wrote.
‘There was quite literally no one more influential in music than Mariah Carey, so how come you snubbed her for a second year in a row? @rockhall,’ another posted.

In addition to this year’s class winners, several other artists who were not listed on the ballot will be inducted into the hall due to a decision made by the board, according to Variety.
Salt-N-Pepa and Warren Zevon will be joining the Musical Influence category, the board decided.
The group also chose producer Thom Bell, pianist Nicky Hopkins, and bᴀssist Carole Kay as recipients of the Musical Excellence Award.
Former Warner Bros. Records head Lenny Waronker, who signed Prince and R.E.M, will also be receiving the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
In order to be eligible for induction, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years, according to AP. The induction ceremony will take place in Los Angeles this fall.
Nominees were voted on by more than 1,200 artists, historians and music industry professionals. The selection criteria include ‘an artist´s impact on other musicians, the scope and longevity of their career and body of work, as well as their innovation and excellence in style and technique.’
Last year, Mary J. Blige, Cher, Foreigner, A Tribe Called Quest, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Matthews Band and singer-guitarist Peter Frampton all were inducted.
