The Stolen Girl delves into the search for a nine-year-old child, Lucia, who disappears during a visit to her new best friend’s house.
Her mother, Elisa Blix (Denise Gough), is a busy air-hostess who balances working life and taking care of her two children with her husband, Fred.
Quite literally overnight, her life is thrown into turmoil as the case of her missing daughter develops.
The house she dropped Lucia off to stay at turns out to be a holiday rental and both the friend and her mother, Rebecca, have vanished too.
Hitting Disney+ on April 16 (Wednesday) it also stars Holliday Grainger, Beatrice Campbell and Jim Sturgess.
Though fictional, The Stolen Girl has several eerie details that are similar to the real-life tragic case of Madeleine McCann who went missing in 2007.

During the drama, some people place the blame on Elisa who made the rash decision to allow Lucia to stay over at her new friend’s house without even properly getting to know the family first.
She had only briefly met Rebecca, the child’s mother, before agreeing to let her daughter stay overnight.
And Elisa’s mother-in-law harshly claimed, ‘She spent half her childhood with me while you were up in the air.’
While Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were formally named as suspects by Portuguese police in September 2007.
However, their status as suspects was cleared in July 2008.

Elisa also experiences unpleasant judgement from the public online during the series, which echoes the cruel trolling Madeleine’s parents have also faced.

It currently has an impressive 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has even been praised by The Conversation for making a young female victim centre stage, in the same way Adolescence brought the spotlight on boys.
