HGTV star slams New York Times in furious response to ‘slanted’ article

HGTV star Egypt Sherrod had a bone to pick with the New York Times after an article was published about their show which she slammed as ‘slanted’ and ‘hypercritical.’

Sherrod, 48, and her husband Mike Jackson star on the HGTV series Married to Real Estate, and were among a series of figures featured in The Times article about home renovation content.

The article, headlined ‘The Strange Allure of Watching Other People Tear Up Their Homes’, profiled various DIY and home renovation influencers and spent some time on the Married To Real Estate set.

The reporter described their production as a ‘well-oiled machine’ in which the couple ‘breezed in’ to complete a renovation while a construction worker wearing AirPods ‘revved a power drill for background noise.’

Sherrod was displeased with the article after it was published last week and felt it failed to capture the true amount of work she and her husband spend on their business.

DailyMail.com has contacted the New York Times for comment.

‘I am tired y’all,’ Sherrod began in a video. ‘I am tired of having to prove myself. I am tired of being overworked, underpaid, if paid at all. I am tired of not getting equal press or publicity. I am tired of being the scape goat. I am tired.

‘So there’s this article in the New York Times because Mike and I were invited to be in the New York Times by our network to promote this season of our show. And they came to set, took pictures of Mike and I, documented the whole experience, and then wrote it in a slant, as if we ease in and ease out of properties. As if we’re not doing the real work like, on a Sunday. After coming home from Panama,’ she said as they completed work on a property.

‘We’re here right now, working on a clients’ house. No cameras, no cameras, this is what we do. When I leave here, I gotta go limewash a wall.’

She then shared footage of herself ‘still working’ at nearly 9PM.

‘Oh and no New York Times reporters here for an hour to tell us we’re just doing this for TV,’ she said.

Egypt called the article ‘hypercritical’ about ‘the entire home tv movement’ and insisted she and her spouse were ‘the real deal’ in the accompanying caption.

She claimed the reporter spent just an hour on the set as well.

‘You have no idea. You see the glory, but not the grind. The beauty, but not the behind-the-scenes story. This is the story too. I could smile through it, pretend everything’s perfect—but that would be a disservice to every person watching, especially those tv hosts and designers or realtors coming up behind me.

‘We were so excited to have the @nytimes come to set and write a story about US. Imagine our surprise this morning to see ONLY me… with a hypercritical article about the entire home tv movement.

‘I won’t be a scapegoat. I won’t be martyred. I can’t speak for anyone else—but Mike and I are still a small family business. We’re the real deal. So for a publication like The New York Times to use my image to headline an article filled with distortions and mediocrity? That’s not just irresponsible—it’s unacceptable! Let the fakes be your poster child. Not me.

‘We’re one of the very few positive shows about Black families on television. And yet, we’re constantly overlooked—left out of the press, the covers, the licensing deals, the invites. We don’t get equal treatment. We don’t get equal protection. We have to fight for every inch to protect our narrative. Even from BIPOC media.

‘And then, for a reporter to spend ONE hour with us and write as if we’re just TV characters pᴀssing through? That’s not journalism. That’s laziness.’

Sherrod also took issue with the pH๏τo include in the article, which captured her doing work on camera but did not include her husband.

‘Even worse—only showing me, when my husband stood right there with me, gave that interview with me? That’s not just a slight. That’s erasure. And it reinforces exactly the kind of division we work so hard to fight against.

‘From the beginning, we made a vow: If anything ever comes between our marriage or our family—this ends.

‘So today, I’m choosing to share this pain. For every woman, every family, who can’t speak up. Who can’t cry out. Who can’t scream at the hypocrisy. I see you. I am you. Enough.’

Married to Real Estate debuted on HGTV in 2022 and follows Egypt, a ‘do-it-all woman’ and ‘property expert’, and her husband, ‘a builder with a pᴀssion for woodworking, art and creative projects,’ according to HGTV.

‘Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson get clients into the Atlanta, Georgia dream neighborhoods they never thought they could afford. By using their unparalleled real estate expertise, the couple will make smart purchases and even smarter renovations while managing their busy family,’ a description for the show reads.

Season four of the show recently debuted.

‘SEASON 4. We’re ready, are you!? Mark your calendars, write it on a post-it, put it in your notes, and tell your peeps. We’re back March 12th at 8pm on @hgtv,’ Mike posted to Instagram.
