Green Day alter American Idiot lyrics to call out Donald Trump during headlining Coachella performance

Green Day altered the lyrics to their hit track American Idiot to diss Donald Trump while headlining day two of the 2025 Coachella Music Festival on Saturday.

The rock band – which consists of frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, bᴀssist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool – closed out the second night of the annual festivities and performed a number of songs such as 21 Guns.

At one point while on the main Coachella Stage, Armstrong began belting out lyrics to American Idiot but changed ‘I’m not a part of a redneck agenda’ to ‘I’m not part of the MAGA agenda.’

The group previously made the same alteration while appearing at Dick Clark’s 2024 Rockin’ New Year’s Eve – which was slammed by some fans.

Green Day also referenced to the Israel-Palestine conflict during Jesus Of Suburbia and tweaked the lyric ‘Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimized’ to ‘Runnin’ away from pain like the kids from Palestine.’

American Idiot – which is known as a protest song – was initially written to criticize former president George W. Bush in 2004.

Last month in March, they also made another dig at Trump as well as Elon Musk while performing in Melbourne amid the band’s ongoing Saviors Tour.

At the time, Billie addressed the crowd and asked, ‘Don’t you want these f***ing politicians to shut the f*** up?’

He continued, ‘Don’t you want Elon Musk to shut the f*** up? Don’t you want Donald Trump to shut the f*** up?

‘I’m not gonna get angry. F*** that s**t. We don’t need to see what’s on Twitter. This is about us, everybody together.’

At another point during the performance in Australia, the singer added: ‘We’re going to put all of our differences away right now. Australia, you’re not as f***ed up as America.’

Last year in January, Green Day took to the stage for a set during Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve where they made the same lyric change of: ‘I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.’

Elon Musk – who is currently helming the DOGE effort under Trump – took to X at the time and wrote, ‘Green Day goes from raging against the machine to milquetoastedly raging for it.’

During a past interview with Rolling Stone, drummer Mike Dirnt shared his response to the Tesla founder’s tweet and told the outlet, ‘Elon Musk actually is the machine.

‘I can’t take anything else from that. He’s not shy about saying stupid s**t on the internet. Whatever. The song’s twenty years old, and we’re Green Day. What did you expect?’

Also in January, the band made a stop in South Africa where they changed the American Idiot lyrics once again to say, ‘I’m not a part of the Elon agenda.’

During an interview with Billboard at the 2025 Grammy Awards, the group opened up about the recent changes to the lyrics geared towards Trump and Musk.

Armstrong expressed to the publication, ‘I think American Idiot is like – it takes on a life of its own.

‘And so anytime that there’s like, you know for a protest song, anytime that there’s trouble in the world and times of uncertainty I think a lot of people connect to that song.’

The singer added, ‘So, you know, you can change a lyric here or change it there and then all of it sudden it just becomes current again.’

During the band’s Coachella set on Saturday, they sang a number of other hit tracks such as Holiday, Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends and Basket Case.

Fireworks also lit up the night sky as Green Day took to the stage, but one hit a palm tree near an artists section – causing it to catch on fire, People reported.

Aside from their Coachella stop, Green Day is currently embarking on their Saviors Tour – which is in support of their 14th studio album Saviors that dropped in January 2024.

The concerts officially kicked off last year in May in Spain and is set to conclude later this year on September 26, 2025 in Ocean City, Maryland.

After Coachella, the band is set to make stops in other countries such as England, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Greece, Canada and Brazil before returning to the U.S. for the final show.

Last month in March, the group notably cancelled their final gig of their stop in Australia and said it was a ‘huge disappointment.’

At the time, Green Day released a statement one day prior which read: ‘Hey Australia, unfortunately due to circumstances out of our control, tomorrow’s Gold Coast show has been cancelled.

The singer added, 'So, you know, you can change a lyric here or change it there and then all of it sudden it just becomes current again'; the band seen in March in Inglewood

‘With Cyclone Alfred bringing some seriously nasty weather, it’s just not possible to go ahead safely. We know this is a huge disappointment, and we’re just as bummed as you are. Stay safe out there!’

During his interview with Rolling Stone, Mike Dirnt talked about their Saviors album and discussed the ‘glam-rock’ aspects to the tracks.

‘We love glam rock,’ the bᴀssist said. ‘We love just garage rock, just good pop songs presented different ways, and we got to stretch. We’ve got to spread our wings and try new things as a band.

‘I wouldn’t want to try and write Dookie 14 times,’ he added, referencing to their 1994 album. ‘That’s crazy. We’ve got to try and grow as a band, and that’s our job. It’s not the listener’s job to grow.’
