When a former aide of Caroline Flack found herself being interviewed by the star’s mother during filming for a new documentary, she expected a pleasant chat reminiscing about the late Love Island presenter.
Instead, she was concerned to find herself, as she saw it, being interrogated by Christine Flack about the details of her daughter’s final weeks.
While it’s entirely understandable that Christine would want to understand all the factors that led to Caroline taking her life five years ago, it seems her determination to discover the truth may be causing some difficulties for the Disney+ project.
Although the show is still due to air later this year, the production team are reported to be finding it difficult to recruit sufficient participants.
Certainly, some of those who have taken part so far say the experience is not entirely in keeping with a quote Caroline herself wrote on Instagram less than two months before she died: ‘In a world where you can be anything, be kind.’
Instead, those familiar with the show say there are concerns it could end up ‘throwing its participants under the bus’ as Christine attempts (for perfectly understandable reasons) to find answers for her daughter’s death in February 2020, just three weeks before she was due to stand trial for ᴀssaulting her then boyfriend, Lewis Burton, in a late-night bust-up at her north-London flat.
Five years after her death, Disney+ is making a new programme about TV’s Caroline Flack
Christine Flack said of the new project in January: ‘I still have so many questions about what happened to Caroline in her final months, and it’s something I feel deeply compelled to explore, even though I know it will be challenging’
A source said: ‘Some of the people who have been approached believe this is an attempt to rewrite history and find someone new to blame for this total tragedy.
‘[Christine] wants to know why certain people made certain decisions about Caroline, like why did she wear that short black skirt to court, which she was criticised for, why was she taken off Love Island, why did certain people write what they did about her in the media and why did her friends leave her alone before she took her own life?
‘The production team are really struggling to get people to participate. They’re going to have to rethink their approach if they want to make this show at all.’
Some of those approached to be interviewed clearly thought that it would be unendurably uncomfortable to discuss Caroline’s death with her still-grieving mother.
The source added: ‘Disney have a reputation as a woke organisation but it seems that what they are really trying to do here is put people under scrutiny without telling them their true intentions. How will that make them feel?’
Now the team at producers Curious Films are having to consider changing the format in a bid to get enough guests to take part.
The American streaming giant formally announced the project – a 90-minute feature film – in January after spending many months working with Christine to agree on the format.
Curious had previously made the 2021 documentary Caroline Flack: Her Life & Death and Christine said of the new project in January: ‘I still have so many questions about what happened to Caroline in her final months, and it’s something I feel deeply compelled to explore, even though I know it will be challenging.
‘I’m pleased to be working with the team at Curious Films once again, in the hope of bringing clarity and understanding to Carrie’s story – not just for her, but for everyone who cared about her.’

Curious, who recently made the Boyzone: No Matter What documentary for Sky, first contacted friends, colleagues and journalists in October.
Among those contacted were some of Caroline’s closest pals, namely Louise Teasdale and Mollie Grosberg, who were with her through the night before she took her life. It was after they both left that Caroline killed herself.
Both are said to have grown apart from Christine following the tragedy. Sources close to Christine say that she can’t work out why they left Caroline alone, but Louise had to get back to her daughter and has been haunted by her friend’s death ever since.
As a result of the lack of uptake, I’m told Christine is getting frustrated because of the production delays that it is causing, but a source said: ‘Caroline’s death has haunted her friends and changed their lives, there is a view that she should just be left to rest in peace.
‘Maybe everyone involved in the programme thought it would be a lot easier than it was to get people to take part.
‘Everyone understands that her mum is grief-stricken. It’s heartbreaking, Caroline’s memory should be left in peace now rather than raking up the past and causing more upset.’
Caroline’s life spiralled in December 2019 when police attended her flat in Islington after Lewis called them to say she had hit him with a lamp while he was sleeping.

‘[Christine] wants to know why certain people made certain decisions about Caroline, like why did she wear that short black skirt to court, which she was criticised for,’ a source said. Pictured, Caroline attends court in said skirt
At the time she also slashed her wrists. Those close to her say that she ‘went ballistic’ when the police arrived – all of which was recorded on bodycam.
After a visit to hospital she attended a north-London police station where she was told initially that she wouldn’t be charged and would be able to leave with a caution. However, three hours later she called a friend in floods of tears to say that she was to face a criminal charge after all.
Christine wants answers about what happened to her daughter in that police station and why they changed their minds, especially because Lewis refused to make a statement about the alleged attack.
However, it is thought that getting anyone on to the documentary to explain that from either the CPS or the Metropolitan Police is going to be extremely unlikely.
Christine has also pointed the finger at ITV over its decision to sideline her from hosting Love Island after she was arrested. They replaced her with Laura Whitmore.
She has rightly pointed out that when Ant McPartlin was caught drink driving, an incident in which he injured a child, he was not sacked but sent to rehab and had his roles held for him until he returned.
At the time ITV released a statement which said Caroline had quit, though well-placed sources close to the situation ᴀssure me that she was forced to stand down during a phone call which left her ‘absolutely distraught’.
‘She was in bits,’ said a friend. ‘She couldn’t understand why they would get rid of her but keep Ant and neither can Christine. She wants the answer.’
Still, while friends of Caroline might sympathise, nevertheless they have told me that they are ‘dreading’ this documentary and hope it never sees the light of day.
A Disney+ said: ‘Filming for [the documentary] began in 2024 and is still under way, as planned. The documentary film features contributions from Caroline’s family and friends, to help understand the events in the final months of her life.’
Christine Flack and Curious were contacted prior to publication but did not respond to the Daily Mail’s requests for comment.
