114million people have watched Adolescence but I’m NOT one of them, says its teenage star – showing it at my school is my worst nightmare

Adolescence was an immediate smash hit for Netfllix garnering 114million in less than a month – but its storyline was a dark one, highlighting a very pressing issue.

The four-part series sees a 13-year-old schoolboy called Jamie Miller, played by breakout star Owen Cooper, accused of brutally murdering a female classmate.

The 15-year-old actor was just 13 when he landed the role, and so convincing is his chilling portrayal that he has since bagged himself a role as young Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation.

But speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday alongside co-stars Stephen Graham, who created the show, Ashley Walters and Erin Doherty – Owen made a surprising confession.

‘I haven’t watched the show fully,’ he said. ‘I just don’t like watching myself – and now Jack says it’s going into schools … that’s my worst nightmare!’

‘I’m not watching it in my own school, no chance,’ he said, before admitting he’d maybe watch episodes one, two and four, but not three – where his acting prowess shines best.

Owen recently lifted the lid on his ‘mad’ return to school after taking on the lead role in the hit Netflix show.

In an interview with The New York Times last week, Owen admitted his return to normality was ‘a bit mad’.

Chatting to the publication alongside co-star Stephen Graham, who plays his dad Eddie in the show, the young actor revealed he had lots of attention from younger children as he returned to class on Monday.

He then said that Tuesday was better with only ‘a bit of bother,’ which caused Stephen to chime in with: ‘What kind of bother?’

Owen then reᴀssured that it wasn’t anything serious – just children coming up to him, shouting his name and then running away.

His on-screen father Stephen smiled as he responded: ‘Ah, just some silly b*******.’

It follows the news that Adolescence has hit Netflix’s Top 10 Global chart, gaining a jaw-dropping 96.7million views in just three weeks.

The four-part series has now landed a spot on Netflix’s all-time Most Popular English TV list.

It’s even replaced Bridgerton Season 2 on the list and pushed Stranger Things 3 down to the tenth spot.

It’s no doubt the show will continue to climb on the list past The Night Agent Season 1 and Michelle Keegan’s Fool Me Once which both sit at 98million views.

If the show continues it’s record-breaking streak, it has a chance to replace top spot Wednesday: Season 1, which holds 252million views.

Or steal second spot Stranger Things 4, with a whopping 140million views.

Owen’s hopes of an historic Emmy win received a mᴀssive boost in March – ironically as he was ruled out of competing for Best Actor.

The 15-year-old will instead be entered into ceremonies as Best Supporting Actor for his role as murder suspect Jamie Miller, multiple sources suggested to MailOnline.

The Netflix show’s creator Stephen will go into the Best Actor category in his place.

The first of the major awards contests that Adolescence qualifies for will be this Autumn’s Primetime Emmys, which announces nominations in July.

Industry gurus at the website Gold Derby, who track the chances of awards-show success, swapped Cooper and Graham’s categories this week after ‘receiving intel’ on how Netflix would enter the pair.

Sources in Los Angeles said, although nothing was finalised at this stage, it was believed entering Stephen as Best Actor and Owen as Supporting would boost both of their chances of taking home the silverware.

Owen, who was just 14 and in his first-ever role when he filmed his scenes that have stunned the showbiz world, would be the youngest boy to ever win an Emmy.

Just hours after entering the Best Supporting Actor market, he was 14/1 third-favourite and surging up the list.
