It took five surgeries over two years for Olivia Munn to beat bilateral breast cancer in 2024, but she just confessed that her battle with postpartum depression after her son Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney was born in 2021 felt even worse.
The 44-year-old actress said her anxiety kicked into high gear when she ‘could not make any breast milk’ even after hiring three lactation coaches, and ‘nothing was fitting’ as she struggled the shed baby weight.
‘When you stop breastfeeding immediately, your hormones drop, and postpartum can come in like a tornado,’ Olivia (born Lisa) recalled in her SELF Magazine cover story on Thursday.
‘And I didn’t clock any of that and I didn’t tell anybody about that. Then it was like I fell off a cliff, and I was just falling and falling and falling and falling. It was more difficult than going through cancer.’
Munn compared the physically crippling feeling to having sprained her knee as husband John Mulaney had to hold her arm from ‘room to room.’
‘My eyes pop open at 4am I’m gasping for air. I get the тιԍнтness in my chest, and it’s like that all day long,’ the Your Friends & Neighbors actress explained.

‘It felt like the end of the world. It was like when you watch a horror movie — the worst, scariest horror movie you can think of — that’s how my body felt.’
Olivia added: ‘I really tested John’s patience. And thank God he’s the most patient person and can really take a lot.’
And while it only took one year before Munn flaunted her incredible post-baby body in a ʙικιɴι on Instagram, she previously thought it would be impossible while comparing herself to women who’d ‘had babies around the same time.’

‘I reached out to some of them. And I’m like, “How are you in these Valentino shorts and this crop-top just running around LA and having the energy to take all these beautiful pictures?”‘ the half-Vietnamese beauty marveled.
Last year, Olivia underwent a partial hysterectomy where her uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries were removed – so she and the 42-year-old comedian hired a Mᴀssachusetts-based surrogate from an agency to carry their daughter Méi June Mulaney.
‘The surrogate’s still in our life. She was a better pregnant woman than I ever could have been,’ Munn said.
‘She’s an incredible mother, an incredible human being, an incredible friend, just wonderful. I needed [her] to understand that I needed to go this route. It wasn’t for superficial reasons or because I wanted to put my work first.
‘I’m not saying that any of those reasons aren’t valid for those people. And I’m not judging anyone who makes those decisions based on that, but I needed her to understand this would be hard for me.’
