Sean Ono Lennon has shared rare insight into his late father John and mother Yoko Ono’s ‘extremely co-dependent’ relationship, just months after revealing the 92-year-old Japanese singer ‘never moved on’ from The Beatles legend.
The musician, 49, who is the couple’s only child, was just five-years-old when his father was tragically sH๏τ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ sH๏τ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ by Mark Chapman outside his New York apartment in December 1980.
John and Yoko were famously close, they produced music together, staged a Bed-In for Peace in 1969, with Yoko even incorrectly blamed for The Beatles breakup.
Sean told The Times, ahead of a new documentary about his parents: ‘Anyone who pays attention to in the latter part of the Beatles, and then together through the Seventies, can see that my dad had this feeling that John and Yoko had sort of fused into one person’.
While admitting he considers that ᴀssessment a ‘bit extreme’, he said: ‘I think a modern psychologist might say that [my dad] was a bit co-dependent. But the reality is, he didn’t want to individuate any more’.
‘They were the first power couple, like Brangelina or whatever. He wanted them to be an insтιтution beyond just marriage and family. He wanted them to be an artistic union, a political union, a romantic union’.

In December Sean said how his mother never found love again following John’s death: ‘I grew up with my mom speaking about my dad every day,’
During a December appearance on BBC Radio 6 Music he said: ‘She famously cut her hair when my dad died [because] in Japan, you used to cut your hair when your husband dies. So she spoke of him every day and I think she never has moved on from that relationship.’
The Beatle’s ᴀssᴀssin Mark David Chapman, now 69, is scheduled to have his next parole hearing in August after being denied 13 times.
Yoko and John were still married to their spouses Anthony Cox and Cynthia Powell, respectively, when they originally met in 1966.
Cox gained custody of Yoko’s 61-year-old daughter Kyoko Chan Cox after their 1969 divorce, and she miscarried her first son with John in 1968 a few weeks after his divorce from Powell was finalized.
And while they formed the Plastic Ono Band and went on to collaborate on protests and music, the married couple separated for 18 months between July 1973-January 1975 during which he lived with his ᴀssistant May Pang.
‘The truth is, even when they were apart, they were always talking. So I don’t think they ever really broke up. All his stuff was still in the apartment with my mom. It’s not like they had a real separation,’ Sean said.
‘I think it’s clear what his view of my mom was in his life. She was monumental, obviously, and the whole album [Mind Games] is about her. She’s there in the studio… It sort of confirmed how deeply in love he was with my mom.’

The seven-time Grammy winner was technically Yoko’s third husband after divorcing her first husband, Japanese composer Toshi Ichiyanagi, back in 1962.
And Ono reportedly dated interior designer Sam Havadtoy for many years until their 2001 split.
During his turbulent six-year marriage to Cynthia, John welcomed his 61-year-old son Julian Lennon.

It comes after Sean shared a bizarre rant about the star of the new live action Snow White movie, Rachel Zegler.
The West Side Story star, 23, has been at the centre of controversy following Snow White’s disappointing box office performance.
And Sean last week decided to weigh in on the heated discussion with a post on social media attacking Zegler.
Lennon regularly posts his thoughts on X, formerly Twitter, and despite seemingly having no connection to Zegler, or the film itself, made his feelings on the young star clear.
In a now-deleted tweet, Lennon snapped: ‘I agree the vilification went too far. But she also acts like a spoiled ungrateful and disconnected brat. So it’s no surprise.’
The remark came under a bizarre thread Lennon wrote discussing his opinion on the physical attractiveness of Zegler and her co-star Gal Gadot.
‘Both Gal Gadot AND Rachel Zegler are exceptionally beautiful women. Some of y’all are bugging.’

Posting on X, Lennon waded directly into the heated discussion surrounding Zegler’s controversial casting and conduct

He then replied to his own tweet with: ‘Some people are saying “but beauty is on the inside.” That is not the kind of beauty that gets you modeling or acting or even body building jobs. Some people are genetically gifted in the beauty department and that is a fact of life.
‘There’s a lot you can do to help with style and personality but none of that is going to win you a body building compeтιтion, for example, if you don’t have good genetics. Let’s not be babies, physical beauty is not on the inside.’
An X user replied to Lennon defending Zegler, as they said: ‘Both actresses are good performers, yet Zegler does not deserve the vilification that Variety and a lot of Disney “fan boys” are constantly giving her. These kind of people really need to touch grᴀss. I will leave it at that.’
It was to this comment that Lennon replied branding Zegler ‘a spoiled ungrateful and disconnected brat’.
