Escape To The Country viewers blast couple for ‘giving them a midlife crisis’ and complaining BBC is ‘ramming wealth down their throats’ after whopping budget reveal

Escape To The Country viewers blasted a couple for ‘giving them a midlife crisis’ and complained the BBC is ‘ramming wealth down their throats’ after a whopping budget reveal.

Monday’s instalment of the property programme saw presenter Jules Hudson work with retired nurse Fiona and Nigel, who has a background in finance, find their dream abode in Suffolk.

The married couple had big dreams of running a dog-friendly holiday let from their new home and had an impressive budget to match it too.

Jules explained how they ‘love dogs so much, they not only want to walk their own, they run a doggie daycare’.

He went on, ‘As part of their move from the Berkshire town of Maidenhead, to the Suffolk countryside, they plan to expand their canine hospitality with dog-friendly holiday lets.’

The dog-friendly let wasn’t the only requirement for the property, Nigel was keen on building models and was looking for an expansive ‘hobby room’ to keep his creations.

Jules revealed the couple’s ‘very substantial budget of £1.5million’ and how they wanted a ‘Suffolk home in a peaceful location with at least four bedrooms’.

He added: ‘They’d like a separate holiday let, a dog-friendly garden, a large hobby room, and they don’t want to take on any building work.’

However, the huge budget caused quite a reaction from some viewers who took to social media to share their thoughts.

One posted on X: ‘Mmm… only £1.5m to spend… no wonder they need ETTC to help them… I mean there must be oodles of houses to check out on line… anyhow, a good chance to look at what I can’t afford… Happy Days…’

Another penned: ‘£1.5million budget flipping heck! This type of money is triggering my midlife crisis that I’ve not achieved enough #escapetothecountry.’

Someone else wrote: ‘What a stupid programme, a £1.5m house is more than the vast majority of the UK population could dream to have. Yet the @bbc just love to ram this down our throats!’

Later on in the episode, the couple liked most of the properties Jules showed them and had a particular interest in the third.

However, in the end, they went for a completely different house that was located near the third abode.

In another recent episode, an Escape To The Country buyer gasped ‘it’s making me cry’ after a breathtaking garden reveal.

Couple Rich and Sue enlisted help from Steve Brown to help find their perfect property for £600,000, in Powys, Wales.

Steve showed the pair a number of three homes, and the third left the couple lost for words when he took them to the mystery house.

They travelled to the village of Marton and were instantly impressed, saying that the 1960s bungalow certainly had the ‘wow factor’.

Escape To The Country airs Mondays to Fridays at 3pm on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.
