Reunion viewers ‘already hooked’ on new drama after just one episode – raving over ‘compelling twists and turns’ in BBC premiere

Reunion viewers have confessed that they are ‘already hooked’ on the new drama after just one episode.

The new bilingual show featuring British Sign Language and spoken English, directed by Luke Snellin, premiered on BBC One on Monday night.

The BBC’s media pack states: ‘Reunion is a four-part revenge thriller told through the unique point of view of a deaf man isolated from society, both physically and emotionally.

‘We meet Brennan, a convicted murderer, as he leaves prison after serving ten years. Upon leaving prison, Brennan has a clear mission: revenge.’

Reunion stars the likes of Matthew Gurney, Lara Peake, Anne-Marie Duff, Eddie Marsa and Rose Ayling-Ellis.

Many rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts – and they were all very positive.

One confessed: ‘Well I was hooked by #Reunion on @BBC1.’

Another added: ‘As a deaf person, this programme is great to watch and learn the BSL again. Definitely more twist and turns to come! #Reunion.’

‘#Reunion on @bbc – anyone else sob at the ending? Brilliantly acted by all concerned,’ a third chimed in.

A fourth tweeted: #Reunion was compelling I went in tonight without knowing anything about it, but I’m used to watching Walter Presents subтιтles on channel 4. Rare for the BBC to put signing in a mainstream tv slot. Bravo!!!’

Actor Daniel Brennan, who plays protagonist Matthew Gurney, opened up about why he wanted to take on the role of the character.

He said: ‘It’s an amazing storyline and completely different from my previous work. Brennan is on a wildly different journey than that portrayed by normal deaf lives.

‘In previous films, deaf and disabled characters have been portrayed in quite stereotypical ways.

‘This is different, this portrays a man who is hated within the deaf community.

‘That’s why I wanted to know more about him, and that’s why I wanted to get involved.’

Adding why people should watch the show, he said: ‘It is a unique storyline, not one that patronises deaf people, it shows a range of Sign Language, from BSL to SSE!

‘And it’s incredibly visual.

‘Try not to rely on the sound or music but appreciate the visual nature of the show.’

And writer, creator and executive producer William Mager said: ‘Reunion is set within the deaf communit.

‘It has sign language within it, but also it has an element of mystery, intrigue and excitement. Reunion is about hope.

‘It’s about a man who’s lost everything.

‘His wife, his daughter, his friends and his community, but he still has hope that one day, maybe, he’ll find a way to live again.’

Reunion is produced by Warp Films.

Filming for the show took place in Sheffield, south Yorkshire, in the summer last year.

There is a total of four episodes and one series so far.

Reunion airs Monday and Tuesday at 9pm on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.
