Jodie Foster stepped out with her son Kit Bernard Foster on her arm at the Breakthrough Prize Ceremony in Santa Monica, California.

The 23-year-old showed off two new ear piercings, each adorned with a gold stud earring, as he posed with his famous mom, 62, on the red carpet. 

Kit, who towered over his mother, kept his look classic with a black suit and white shirt accented with a black and white polka dot bowtie. 

Meanwhile the Silence of the Lambs star looked elegant in a sleeveless, midi-length dress with tuxedo elements.

Jodie shares Kit and her other son Charlie, 26, with her former partner Cydney Bernard. They split in 2008 after 15 years together. 

The Academy Award winner made a conscious decision to keep her children out of the spotlight that comes with her high-profile acting career.

‘I know the perils of having a parent involved in your art form are too great,’ she told The Guardian in 2018.

‘My older son is getting more interested in acting now, and I’m glad he discovered it late. My younger son is really shy and I can promise you he will never be an actor.’

Charlie accompanied his mother to the SAG Awards in February.

While Jodie’s glittering career in TV and film began in the early 1970s when she was a child, her own children have benefited from conventional upbringings away from the public eye.

Eldest son Charlie, a Yale graduate, has previously been described by his mother as a ‘theatre geek,’ while youngest son Kit  has pursued a career in science.

In January, Jodie collected another award for her mantle – the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Series or TV Film, courtesy of her role in True Detective: Night Country, and son Kit was once again there to support her.

Paying tribute to her children after accepting her latest award, she told guests at the Beverly Hilton H๏τel: ‘I just want to thank my family.

‘Because Kit, my scientist son, and Charlie, my actor son who’s starting his career, hopefully you understand the joy, such joy, that comes from doing really hard, meaningful, good work.

‘So my boys, I love you, and this, of course, is for you. And the love of my life, Alex, thank you forever.’

In September, the notoriously guarded actress admitted she was excited about what the future holds for her two boys. 

They’re at that age where they’re starting their careers and they’re pretty insecure about what’s gonna happen,’ she told People.

‘But every time they get a joy … like I got this job or I got an audition, my heart just fills up 14 times because I have this memory of a beautiful career that’s built on doing meaningful work, and I know that’s the recipe for happiness.

‘So I’m just thrilled for them, for the future.’ 

Foster welcomed eldest son Charles in 1998, with her youngest – born Christopher Bernard but commonly referred to as Kit – following in 2001.

Both were raised in Los Angeles, and the actress previously stressed the need to give them settled upbringings after her own was disrupted by her burgeoning career.

‘I have a psychological need to create a really safe, normal life for them, because if there was anything I missed in my childhood, that was it,’ she told PEOPLE in 2007.

‘I really craved having a routine, stable life and that’s what I’ve given to my kids.’

Back in January, Jodie revealed why she didn’t tell her kids she was a Hollywood star while they were growing up.

‘I guess I just didn’t want them to know me that way,’ she said on The View. ‘I wanted them to know me as their mom and the person who went away to work and stuff.’

‘I just didn’t want them to be confused about what I did for a living,’ she added.

‘And I was like, “Yeah, and this is this set and this set and this set. And for a really long time, he thought I was a construction worker. He thought I did construction.’

With both Charles and her younger son, Christopher ‘Kit’ now adults, Jodie was asked about whether she has watched any of her films with them.

‘They have no interest in watching my movies with me. I think they’re going to catch True Detective ’cause they’re really into that,’ she said of her HBO series.
