Ex-James Bond Pierce Brosnan says he ‘sympathises’ with Helen Mirren’s claims that the iconic franchise is built on ‘profound Sєxism’

Ex-James Bond Pierce Brosnan says he ‘sympathises’ with Helen Mirren’s claims that the iconic franchise is built on ‘profound Sєxism’

Former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan has shared that he sympathises with co-star Helen Mirren’s claims that the iconic franchise is build on ‘profound Sєxism.’

The actor, 71, played the iconic spy in four films from 1995 to 2002, but despite his affiliation with the franchise, he said there is ‘always going to be conflict’ over the representation of the character.

Pierce has recently starred with Helen, 79, in the Paramount+ series MobLand, and the Oscar winner recently shared she is ‘opposed’ to the idea of a female 007.

But when asked about Helen’s recent remarks, Pierce told People: ‘She let them have it. Yes, there’s a certain agreement there.

‘But there’s a certain world and room to move within the proscenium arch of what Ian Fleming put down. So there’s always going to be conflict.’

Pierce added that while he worked closely with Helen on MobLand, they ‘didn’t talk about’ the Bond films during production.

Helen recently admitted she wasn’t a fan of the iconic franchise, telling The Standard: ‘I have to say I was never a great ward [of Bond],

‘I’m a huge fan of Pierce Brosnan. He also happens to be one of the nicest people you’ll ever have the pleasure to work with, and indeed Daniel Craig, who I’ve met and know a little bit. Again, a very lovely gracious person.’

‘The whole series of James Bond was actually not my thing,’ she said. ‘It really wasn’t. I never liked James Bond. I never liked the way women were in James Bond.’

Helen went onto say she is ‘opposed’ to the introduction of a female 007, saying: ‘The whole concept of James Bond is drenched and born out of profound Sєxism.’

Back in 2015, Pierce also responded to comments made by the most recent James Bond, Daniel Craig, who called his own version of the character as ‘not as Sєxist and misogynist’ as previous incarnations.

The Mamma Mia star said at the time: ‘I never thought of him like that. I saw him as a solitary, enigmatic character,’ but added that he did concur that Daniel’s version of 007 was ‘very f*****g lonely.’

‘I saw him as a fellow who carries a certain amount of pain and angst. Deep down as someone who’s quite troubled, and solitary – [though] Ian Fleming really doesn’t give you a lot to hang your hat on.’

Brosnan’s first appearance as James Bond, in 1995’s GoldenEye, did attempt to address the issue with Judi Dench’s M calling the agent a ‘Sєxist, misogynist dinosaur’. However, Pierce has stated it was merely a ‘witty line’.

In a recent interview, Helen said that she 'opposes' to the idea of a female 007, telling The Standard that she has never been a fan of the iconic franchise

He said: ‘It was for the reintroduction of Bond, having been dormant for six years… a good line to be delivered by Dame Judi: funny and telling.

‘But you try to play within the lines and within the stillness of the character – that’s where hopefully you see something of him. The rest is phonetic and kinetic and dynamic and… fun.’

Speculation about the next Bond has been high for years, but in December, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Broccoli family – who have produced the Bond films for decades – and Amazon had reached ‘an impᴀsse’ regarding new movies after Amazon acquired MGM Studios and the rights to distribute the franchise in 2022.

On February 20, Amazon MGM Studios, Barbara Broccoli, and Michael G Wilson announced Amazon would ᴀssume creative control over the 007 franchise.

Pierce recently told The Telegraph that it is a ‘given’ that Daniel Craig’s successor should be British – while adding that he ‘lamented’ the takeover.

British-American star Andrew Garfield and American actor Oscar Isaac are some of the contenders for the role.

Brosnan added of the Amazon takeover: ‘I thought it was coming for some time I guess, but I think it was the right decision for Barbara and Michael.

‘It takes great courage for them to let go, they will still have a say in matters, I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect.’

‘In this world that is moving so fast now, at the speed of light, the change does come with a certain lament,’ he said.
