Adolescence star Owen Cooper, 15, lifts the lid on his ‘mad’ return to school after taking on lead role in hit Netflix show

Adolescence star Owen Cooper has lifted the lid on his ‘mad’ return to school after taking on the lead role in the hit Netflix show.

The 15-year-old break-out star was just 13 when he landed the role of Jamie Miller, a schoolboy accused of brutally murdering a female classmate.

So convincing is his chilling portrayal, that he has since landed himself a role as young Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation, and is also set to feature in White Lotus star Amy Lou Wood’s upcoming series Film Club.

In an interview with The New York Times this week, Owen admitted his return to normality was ‘a bit mad’.

Chatting to the publication alongside co-star Stephen Graham, who plays his dad Eddie in the show, the young actor revealed he had lots of attention from younger children as he returned to class on Monday.

He then said that Tuesday was better with only ‘a bit of bother,’ which caused Stephen to chime in with: ‘What kind of bother?’

Owen then reᴀssured that it wasn’t anything serious – just children coming up to him, shouting his name and then running away.

His on-screen father Stephen smiled as he responded: ‘Ah, just some silly b*******.’

It follows the news that Adolescence has hit Netflix’s Top 10 Global chart, gaining a jaw-dropping 96.7million views in just three weeks.

The show, which aired on the streaming service on March 13, has amᴀssed another 30.4million views in just one week.

The four-part series has now landed a spot on Netflix’s all-time Most Popular English TV list.

It’s even replaced Bridgerton Season 2 on the list and pushed Stranger Things 3 down to the tenth spot.

It’s no doubt the show will continue to climb on the list past The Night Agent Season 1 and Michelle Keegan’s Fool Me Once which both sit at 98million views.

If the show continues it’s record-breaking streak, it has a chance to replace top spot Wednesday: Season 1 which holds 252million views.

Or steal second spot Stranger Things 4, with a whopping 140million views.

It also follows the news that Owen’s hopes of an historic Emmy win received a mᴀssive boost – ironically as he was ruled out of competing for Best Actor.

The 15-year-old will instead be entered into ceremonies as Best Supporting Actor for his role as murder suspect Jamie Miller, multiple sources suggested to MailOnline.

The Netflix show’s creator Stephen will go into the Best Actor category in his place.

The first of the major awards contests that Adolescence qualifies for will be this Autumn’s Primetime Emmys, which announces nominations in July.

Industry gurus at the website Gold Derby, who track the chances of awards-show success, swapped Cooper and Graham’s categories this week after ‘receiving intel’ on how Netflix would enter the pair.

Sources in Los Angeles said, although nothing was finalised at this stage, it was believed entering Graham as Best Actor and Cooper as Supporting would boost both of their chances of taking home the silverware.

Owen, who was just 14 and in his first-ever role when he filmed his scenes that have stunned the showbiz world, would be the youngest boy to ever win an Emmy.

And last week, just hours after entering the Best Supporting Actor market, he was 14/1 third-favourite and surging up the list.

Meanwhile, Stephen Graham issued a shock update on a second series of Adolescence after the ‘overwhelming’ response to the record-breaking Netflix hit.

Adolescence follows the story of a young boy called Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), who gets accused of killing his female classmate Katie (Emilia Holliday).

The four-part series has received rave reviews over the past three weeks and many are desperate to know if there will be a second series.

Speaking with Variety, Stephen, who plays Jamie’s dad Eddie Miller, said: ‘Possibly, let’s see how the figures are.

‘But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story.’

Meanwhile Stephen’s wife Hannah Walters, who plays Mrs. Bailey in the show, added of the positive reviews: ‘It’s been overwhelming.’

She also said: ‘A prequel to Adolescence, that’s certainly not going to happen.

‘But there’s so much mileage in the one-sH๏τ and so much mileage in investing into human nature again and looking at something else.

‘But yeah, everything’s looking good… everyone’s happy, shall we say?’

Stephen, who created and wrote the show alongside Jack Thorne, has admitted that he didn’t expect Adolescence to be so popular.

He added to the publication: ‘I suppose what I’m trying to say is that we had no idea that it would impact socially the way it has…

‘But it seems to have cut through all the race, creed and hierarchical structures of society with the message that it’s carrying about our youth.’

Since the show has dropped many fans have questioned if there will ever be a second series.

And although Stephen has hinted at a potential, the director Philip Barantini has said that it should just stick to one series.

He told PA news agency: ‘Personally, I think it should be a standalone thing, because the conversation that it’s sparked has just blown my mind.

‘I mean, we really did hope that it would spark a bit of a conversation for parents, but the fact that it’s gone global, and it’s just this little town that we sH๏τ it in, and it was a small British TV show that we were making.

‘But I don’t personally (think there should be another series).

‘I think it’s a package of this moment in time, and I think personally, that’s how I feel about it.’

All four episodes of Adolescence are available to stream on Netflix now.
