GK Barry has revealed she struggled with ‘vicious’ reaction to her Caribbean accent when her family relocated to the UK from the British Virgin Islands.
The social media star, 25, had grown up with her mum Loretta and stepfather Andrew in Tortola before they moved to Cambridge when she was just eight years old.
Speaking on the Loose Women podcast, GK told Jane Moore that her family moved to a small town that was ‘predominantly white,’ and her classmates couldn’t ‘wrap their head around’ her Caribbean accent.
Speaking about her upbringing in the British Virgin Islands, GK said: ‘From as young as I can remember, I was in Tortola and I was one of the only white girls.
‘All the aunties were doing my hair, they were braiding my hair, little cornrows and I just never saw anything different about that. I just thought, ”Oh, this is it”.
‘But also the school that I went to, there were so many different races that it was just normal for me to see just any race, at any time… So I was friends with everyone. I had an incredible time.’

Discussing her family moving back to the UK, she explained: ‘And then when I moved back to the UK, we moved back to a predominantly white, small town and I had a Caribbean accent.
‘Now Jane, I don’t know if you’ve ever gone into a small town with a Caribbean accent and be white, but it’s vicious.
‘It was just really, really weird and most people couldn’t wrap their head around [it at school]… I’m talking about my life and people had no clue what I was on about.
‘And then obviously you’ve got the other side, my dad was getting a lot of hate at the time because again, we were in a white community, he was getting a lot of racism.
‘So, it was sort of just like, ‘I don’t really know where we all stand here’.’ and Jane confirms, ‘This is your stepdad, but he’s your dad.’
GK also candidly revealed that she was bullied when she went to school in the UK, admitting she ‘struggled to make friends’ and would be ‘put into group chats where people were horrible about her.’
She told Jane: ‘I was very lanky. I wasn’t like the stereotypical pretty girl like that you would have at school. I was really weird. I wasn’t smart… Academically no. I’m smart, I’d say, in my fields, like I know how to tell a story well. I know what’s going to work, but maths? Pᴀss. I have no clue.
‘So, I really struggled with that and I think I was trying so hard to fit in that it made the whole thing worse. Do you know what I mean? Because it was then people were like, ‘What is this girl doing?’. I just really struggled to make friends at school.’

‘I will never forget this, being put in group chats where people have been horrible about you, then you’d be removed so you couldn’t reply. It would just be you could see everything they’d said about you. And then you’ve got the anxiety of ”I’ve got to see them tomorrow, what’s going to happen tomorrow?”.’
‘It wasn’t very physical… It was more like, people are going to be nasty to you online. People are going to be nasty to you in person, they’re going to make you feel excluded.
‘They’re going to speak about you loudly while you’re in the same room and I’m not a very confrontational person, so if someone’s doing that, I’m just going to sit and let it happen.’

‘Then she’ll get down on one knee!’
GK has been open about her Sєxuality and despite being aware she was biSєxual, the thought of dating a woman was daunting.

GK finished in fifth place and was evicted on day 20 of the compeтιтion, while McFly’s Danny Jones went on to win the ITV show.
Speaking as she joined GK on an episode of her Saving Grace podcast earlier this month, Ella said: ‘I tried to hold my s**t together, but I was actually in hell. I never want that to happen again.
‘I was a shell of myself. My mum was worried about my health – my mental health.’
Ella went on to explain how Grace managed to ruin the surprise of their reunion on the bridge by repeatedly asking producers if she was there.
Grace said: ‘I managed to find out that Ella had flown over. Before I left, I didn’t know if she was coming or not because if she was allowed from football.’
