Kate Garraway’s Bake Off dream shatters in jaw-dropping disaster but admits a Hollywood handshake ‘felt like love’

Kate Garraway’s Bake Off dream shatters in jaw-dropping disaster but admits a Hollywood handshake ‘felt like love’

Celebrity Bake off will see in a dramatic third week as a new round of celebrities take to the tent on Sunday.

The Channel 4 cooking show sees hosts Alison Hammond, 50, and Noel Fielding, 51, welcome four new stars for the Stand Up To Cancer special, with efforts being judged by Paul Hollywood, 59, and new judge Caroline Waldegrave, 72.

And Kate Garraway is left stunned when Paul awards her the coveted handshake for her first bake in the upcoming episode.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 57, gasped: ‘Oh my God, I got a handshake!’ before joking: ‘It felt like love – I think there was a moment where he had to unpeel my fingers.’

However her success is short lived when the technical challenge proves a nightmare for her.

Struggling with her mix, she groaned: ‘Look at the state of this… you could tarmac the M25 with it. It’s just hopeless.’

As her jam turns to concrete, she admitted: ‘I don’t think anyone’s gone from hero to zero quite so fast as I did.’

Elsewhere, comedian Phil Wang, 35, raised eyebrows by recreating his own six-pack in choux pastry.

Turning to the camera he joked: ‘The judges laughed a lot about how ripped I am, which shows how hidden this talent is.’

But it was Alma’s Not Normal star Sophie Willan who left the tent in hysterics, crafting a pair of choux pastry breasts, complete with raspberry nipples.

Judge Hollywood is left momentarily speechless before stammering: ‘I’m still getting my head around your hidden talent being that you can carry things under your breasts.’

Sophie then proves her point by tucking a jar of sugar beneath them.

Meanwhile, Famalam and Black Ops star Gbemisola Ikumelo’s bake packed an unexpected punch – quite literally.

Paul, struggling with the heat, spluttered: ‘I like a bit of spice, but even now it’s burning the back of my throat… it’s like I’ve been punched.’

The celebrity line-up for this season includes Sarah Beeny, Adam Buxton, Amelia, Scarlette and Stuart Douglas, Kate, Ellie Goldstein, and Gloria Hunniford OBE.

Also among the hopefuls are Jim Howick, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Roman Kemp, Jamali Maddix, Maxine, Chris and Rosie Ramsey, Rebecca Lucy Taylor, Meera Syal, Tommy Tiernan, Phil, Sophie Willan, Amelia Dimoldenberg, and Maxine Peake.

Prue’s decision to step away temporarily from the celebrity edition of the show was confirmed early last year.

However, when rumours circulated that she might be quitting the show, Prue was quick to clarify the confusion during an appearance on This Morning.

She told This Morning hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley: ‘It’s absolutely not true at all! [that she’s quit the show]. What I’m not doing this year is the celebrity one.’

‘These things are filmed back-to-back all the way through summer from April to August so you don’t get any time off. I’m getting quite old and there’s places I want to see. So I’m not doing this year’s.’

Prue later told MailOnline about the decision: ‘I absolutely love working on Bake Off and am looking forward to filming the next series and meeting our new bakers.’

‘I am only stepping back from the Celebrity series, which is just a question of the filming commitment involved as we make these shows back to back.’

A spokesman for Bake Off creator Love Productions confirmed at the time: ‘Prue will be stepping back from The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer.’

‘Prue absolutely loves working on Bake Off but filming two series a year can be punishing on top of her other commitments,’ a source told The Sun.

‘She has already filmed the normal series, which will air this year but she will not appear on the celebrity version.’

‘Prue has made it clear she adores the show and would like to come back in 2025. She will turn 85 next year, so it’s not surprising that she wants to take time off.’

Stand Up To Cancer UK, the joint national fundraising campaign between Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK, has raised millions of pounds to fund life-saving cancer research.

All the money raised by Stand Up To Cancer supports translational research, helping to turn discoveries from the lab into tests and treatments that benefit patients.

The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer will air on Channel 4 on Monday.
