I screamed in terror as my healthy toddler collapsed in the street – now I know why I have a life-saving warning for every parent

A mother revealed how she screamed in terror as her healthy toddler collapsed in the street and shared her life-saving warning to parents.

Victoria Anderson, 29, appeared on ITV’s This Morning with her son Angus and spoke with hosts Cat Deeley, 48, and Ben Shephard, 50, about the horrific ordeal.

Three-year-old Angus had consumed a raspberry-flavoured slushie for the first time after spotting the bright, pink-coloured ice drink while in a local corner shop with his mother and elder sibling.

The mother-of-five recalled how he was soon ‘lying on the floor’ and ‘looked lifeless’.

‘It happened so quick – I started screaming help, someone call an ambulance,’ Victoria recounted. ‘Someone grabbed a defibrillator from the nearby Tesco.’

Angus was quickly blue-lighted to Glasgow Children’s Hospital, where he remained unconscious for two hours while doctors undertook tests to determine the cause of his episode.

She explained how she ‘thought he’d had a seizure’ and had to stay in the hospital overnight ‘under close observation’.

Doctors told the mother how they hadn’t seen such a case before and Victoria warned how she believed the iced beverages ‘should be banned’.

Eventually, Victoria was given the news that the three-year-old had suffered from glycerol toxicity – which can be caused by through the consumption of slushies

The daytime TV show’s Dr Zoe Williams explained how Glycerol, which was in the slushie drink, ‘is deemed to be relatively safe and is in lots of food’.

However, she added: ‘If you have a low bodyweight and a large slushie, it can cause glycerol intoxication syndrome. There have been around 20 cases in the UK and Ireland.’

The doctor went on: ‘There’s guidance from the Food Standards Agency that children under four shouldn’t have them, those over eight should only have one. They are now saying children under the age of eight shouldn’t have them at all.

‘The symptoms can be severe – it’s like being dehydrated, the glycerol sucks the water in the blood. Nausea, headaches, hypovolemic shock, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), it alters the amount of salt in your blood.

‘There are so many people out there who are just becoming aware of this – hopefully now they’ll take caution.’

In a previous interview, Victoria called again for the drinks to be completely banned and said: ‘I think slushies should be banned altogether or at the very least there needs to be a warning sign for under-4s. But this could potentially happen to any kid of any age.

‘I’ll never buy slushies again. You just don’t know what’s in these drinks. I just want to make as many mums aware as possible what can happen buying these drinks.’

It comes as the Food Standards Agency ruled last year that Tango Ice Blast drinks and slushies are ‘not fit for under-4s’ and that free drink refills should be stopped.

As part of the new guidelines, they have warned cinemas, restaurants and shops to put a stop to promotions such as ‘free refills for under 10s’.
