Adolescence star Erin Doherty reveals she’s ‘so proud’ of the drama for sparking ‘vital’ conversations about misogynistic horrors lurking online

Adolescence star Erin Doherty has revealed she feels ‘so proud’ of the Netflix drama which she says has sparked ‘vital’ conversations about the horrors lurking online.

The new series, which hit the streaming service on March 13, has certainly got viewers talking over the last week for its gripping storyline and the fact that each episode was done in one take.

Adolescence follows the story of a young boy called Jamie Miller (played by Owen Cooper) who has been accused of killing his female classmate after getting involved in misogynistic online forums.

Speaking on the How To Fail podcast this week with Elizabeth Day, Erin said: ‘I’m very proud. I watched it for the first time all in one sitting the other day and never felt that necessity with a project before.

‘I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this needs to be seen’. We need to be having these kinds of conversations.

‘So that is what I am most proud of — that I get to be a little slice of something so vital.’

She also told how she relied on help from her own therapist to do the role justice – as she took on the part of psychologist Briony Ariston who is involved in Jamie’s pre-trial ᴀssessment while he is in custody.

She said: ‘I read the script and had to speak to a therapist, so I spoke to my old therapist.

‘I wanted people to witness someone knowing their professional stance but grappling with it.

‘I wanted to bring in layers and fight the cliché of a psychologist sat in a room asking questions.

‘I don’t want to take full credit for it because it’s the writing, and Owen Cooper who is unreal.

‘I would work with him for the rest of my life if I could.

‘I never felt like I was working with someone that age, it felt like being with a seasoned professional.’

It comes after Adolescence’s writer confirmed that there is an answer to the Netflix drama’s biggest unsolved mystery that ‘left fans hanging’ after the final episode.

The crime drama, which is written and created by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, has made headlines over the past week since landing on the streamer on March 13.

This is thanks to the incredible cast, the fact each episode was filmed in one consecutive sH๏τ, and how it has brought misogyny among young boys to light.

But the four-part show has left viewers with a number of questions – including where the knife is.

Jack Thorne told ᴅᴇᴀᴅline: ‘There is a real joy in how partial this show was able to be. It was written in a really partial way, we couldn’t cover all corners.

‘For instance, episode two has a whole question going through it, of where is the knife? That’s why DI Luke Bascombe (Ashley Walters) is there.

‘We cannot answer that. We don’t answer that.

‘I could have tried to fit it into dialogue in episode three, but that would have felt inauthentic and wrong.’

He added: ‘The audience understands the rhythm that we’re in as dramatists.

‘An audience has certain expectations as to what will happen when that has been embedded in the backs of their heads through watching drama as long as we all have.

‘What this show can do through the one-sH๏τ format is challenge those expectations in a different way.’

Adolescence follows the story of a schoolboy called Jamie, who is arrested for the murder of his female classmate.

Some fans spotted a major clue that ‘gives away’ Jamie’s fate just minutes into the groundbreaking Netflix drama.

One took to TikTok to point out something that has blown a lot of viewers’ minds.

They shared a clip from the first episode, when the police burst into Jamie’s family home to arrest him for the murder and Jamie is in bed in his bedroom.

The schoolboy looks scared as the police surround him and he places his hand on the wall, where part of the wallpaper has come off, and some think that the mark looks like a knife.

They wrote on the video: ‘Foreshadowing. Did anyone else notice?’

And captioned the post: ‘This cannot have been an accident.

‘The level of detail in this show made it a masterpiece. #adolescence #owencooper #netflix #cinematography.’

Many rushed to the comments section on the post to share their thoughts.

One said: ‘The rip in the wallpaper is like a knife and its as if he is holding it. It amazes me how so many people let this show go right over their heads.’

Another added: ‘It’s something I noticed on the last ep too when the dad was in his room.’

‘He even checks his hand as if he’s checking he cleaned them properly,’ a third chimed in.

A fourth added: ‘And the very last scene when the dad is on his bed is like the knife in his back.’

Meanwhile another said: ‘Did not notice that! good spot.’

Another wrote: ‘I kept looking at the tear on the wall. It bothered me, but I didn’t put that together! Brilliant!’

‘I was wondering about that rip as it seemed a important thing,’ a third added.

A fourth chimed in: ‘I didn’t realise this until I saw another TikTok!’

Adolescence is created and written by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham.

The show is directed by Philip Barantini.

Jamie Miller is played by Owen Cooper, while his dad Eddie is played by Stephen Graham.

Christine Tremarco plays his mum Manda, while Amélie Pease plays his sister Lisa Miller.

Top Boy legend Ashley Walters took on the role of DI Luke Bascombe and Erin Doherty plays psychiatrist Briony Ariston.

Recently the future of the show was ‘revealed’ after the series broke streaming records.

Adolescence reached 24.3million views in just the first four days of its release – and many have begged for another season.

A source told The Sun: ‘Execs are thrilled by the results and acclaim for Adolescence, it’s seen as a format that can run and run, at least to a second series if not further, as it could take in a different teen issue each series.

‘The topic has resonated with viewers because it taps into parents biggest fear and there’s plenty of scope for more in the same vein.

‘Stylistically, the one-take creative approach could become the hallmark of the series. It’s one of the aspects which has got everyone talking.’
