Drew Barrymore opened up about her devastation over divorcing Will Kopelman.
While on her daytime talk show on Friday the actress, 50, said the hardest part was becoming a single parent.
The beauty shares daughters Olive, 12, and Frankie, 10, with ex-husband Will whom she was married to for only four years, from 2012 until 2016.
The conversation came up when the ET star interviewed Moon Zappa for her new book, Earth to Moon.
She asked Zappa, 57, ‘Do you think that we also are so determined to be these capable moms, these accountable, these trustworthy…and did you beat yourself up about every little thing along the way?’
The author quickly answered yes, which gave Barrymore than opportunity to expound on her experience.

‘Everything to me was very devastating and took me a long time to recover from if it wasn’t in the traditional family dynamic that I swore I would do for my family because I did not grow up that way,’ she explained.
The Poison Ivy star later recalled feeling jealous of others kids who seemed to be part of more traditional families.
‘It’s weird stuff like that. It’s soup when you’re sick. I remember all the kids at school would go into the office to call their parents when they were sick and I could never get a hold of anybody,’ she told Zappa.
‘And I was so jealous of those kids who would call and be like, “Mom, Dad, come pick me up.” I just would sit there and be like, “What’s that like.”‘

In a clip shared on social media, Barrymore tried to find the positive side of their non-traditional upbringings.
‘Growing up in your house, there was so much freedom, there was so much autonomy,’ she said.
‘That’s a nice reframe,’ the Valley Girl singer said nodding her head, ‘Neglect, autonomy…’
She explained her father, Frank Zappa, ‘was such a prolific cheater that [her mother Gail] went coo-coo from it.’
‘He did?’ queried Barrymore. ‘Oh, yes, he did.’ Zappa ᴀsserted.
That revelation seemed to explain a lot to the Never Been Kissed star. ‘Oh my God, that makes sense now, thinking about it. Oh, my God, ’cause I knew there was some crazy stuff going on, which was why I felt so comfortable there.’

Barrymore was estranged from her mother Jaid, 78, for many years, but now says she is ‘so grateful to her because if she hadn’t allowed me to go and explore all these areas, then I wouldn’t have figured out who I was’
‘I was like, “this is my kind of joint… bring on the looney, I feel real comfortable and safe here.”‘
‘I met your mother,’ Zappa said with understanding. ‘You did know my mom,’ Barrymore said, before reframing the situation again.
‘I love my mom. I’m so grateful to her because if she hadn’t, like, allowed me to go and explore all these areas, then I wouldn’t have figured out who I was.’
Barrymore and her mother, Jaid, 78, were estranged for many years, but have since reconciled after the actress set ‘a lot of boundaries,’ per People.
