Stephen, who created, wrote and starred in Adolescence, picked Owen Cooper to play the protagonist role on the series.
The youngster has had no acting experience prior, but Stephen wanted to give him a chance – and it was a great decision because viewers are fans calling for the star to be nominated for a BAFTA.
And Jo’s appearance on the show isn’t the only This Is England crossover – as it’s very clear that the actor is a caring, family man.
Back in 2023 Thomas Turgoose – who played Shaun Fields in the film and was just 13 – revealed that Stephen offered to adopt him when his mother tragically died from cancer.
After filming wrapped up, Thomas’ mum tragically pᴀssed away and he had to move in with his dad that he had never met.
Thomas said on the Private Parts podcast: ‘When my mum died I moved in with my dad and I didn’t know him, so Shane Meadows and Steven Graham were going to adopt me if things didn’t work out with my dad.’
This Is England was directed and written by Shane Meadows.
It stars Thomas, Stephen, Andrew Shim, Vicky McClure, Joe Gilgun and Rosamund Hanson.

Adolescence premiered on the streaming service on March 13 and has plenty of familiar faces in it.
Stephen, 51, who created and wrote the show with Jack Thorne, took on the role of protagonist Jamie Miller’s (Owen Cooper) dad Eddie.
It comes after a heart-wrenching moment in Netflix hit Adolescence that never should have made it to screens was revealed.
Adolescence arrived on the streaming service on March 13 and has captivated its viewers with its gripping storyline, star-studded cast and cinematographic decision to film each episode in one sH๏τ.
The four-part series follows what happens to 13-year-old Jamie Cooper (Owen Cooper) when he is accused of killing his female classmate.
In the final moments of the fourth instalment, creator and writer Stephen – who plays youngster Jamie’s dad – break down in tears in his son’s room and tucks a teddy bear into his bed.
He then tells the cuddly toy: ‘I should have done better’ – and this wasn’t actually what was supposed to happen.
Director of the crime drama, Philip Barantini told Tudum: ‘We rehearsed it, and it was great…

This is the moment (above) that should have never made the show – when Stephen Graham’s character Eddie kisses and tucks his son Jamie’s teddy bear into bed
‘But I just felt like there’s something about him tucking in Jamie’s teddy.
‘This is the only thing that Eddie’s got that he can touch – that’s malleable, that Jamie’s cuddled, and Jamie’s been with.
‘And then Stephen made it his own.’
Netflix’s outlet Tudum also added that Stephen was originally supposed to ‘get inside Jamie’s bed and pull the covers over his body, like he was an avatar for his imprisoned son’.
That wasn’t the only moment that was improvised in the series.
Owen Cooper revealed a striking four-word comment from the Netflix series that was also completely off script.
The fact that episodes were sH๏τ in one continuous sequence meant that the cast had to think on their feet if something went off script – and that happened to Owen and co-star Erin Doherty – who plays a child psychologist tasked with writing a profile on Jamie ahead of his trial – during one scene.
During an appearance on The One Show last week, Owen, 15, revealed all and said: ‘In episode three, it was the second take of the day – we do two takes a day.
‘So it was the second take and you know I was tired so a yawn came to me.

The new series, which hit the streaming service on March 13, has certainly got viewers talking over the last week for its gripping storyline AND the fact that it was all done in ONE take
‘Then Erin did an amazing line, she said, “Am I boring you?” so that took me back and it made made me smile because it wasn’t in the script.
‘I wasn’t expecting that at all, so it took me back a little bit, but it was amazing.’
The One Show host Clara Amfo was also keen to find out how the youngster found filming in such a particular way and how he avoided any mistakes.
Owen said: ‘The people around me. Stephen [Graham, playing Jamie’s father], Erin, she’s amazing in episode three.
‘It was just the people around me that I could bounce off.
‘It was the script. The script was long, but it was fine because I had the people around me, a lot of it is not followed by the script in episode three, so me and Erin just bounced off each other.’
Stephen, who was also a guest on the show, said: ‘You improvised didn’t you?’
Owen continued: ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah.

‘She helped me so much, Stephen, Ashley [Walters, who plays DI Luke Bascombe, the lead detective on the murder investigation], all of the cast were amazing.’
Earlier on in the interview, Stephen revealed the preparation they all had to undergo to make sure everything was perfect for the continuous sH๏τ.
He explained: ‘Each episode is sH๏τ over three weeks, but for the first week, our amazing and unbelievable director Philip Barantini, they were absolutely phenomenal.
‘So for the first week, working on the script, analysing the text, the second week, we kind of work with the camera and we choreograph the whole thing.
‘Then the third week, you shoot two scenes a day.
‘So ultimately you could end up with 10 takes, but for the first episode, that was our second take.
‘Your [Owen] episode, which is unbelievable, episode three, take 13. We had a couple of stops.
‘It’s from the beginning to the very end. It’s all done in one continuous series.’ .
All episodes of Adolescence are available to stream on Netflix now.
