On Tuesday, Drew Barrymore shared a video of herself reflecting on her extraordinary, difficult childhood in the spotlight while getting glam with her make-up artist Lauren Lazaro Gulino and hairstylist Daniel Howell.
‘I don’t know how I ever went through any of that, and it just feels too indulgent and egotistical to be like, “Ugh, I can’t believe I survived or that I got through what I went through,”‘ the 50-year-old former child star – who boasts 36.2M social media followers – confessed.
‘I just think of like, “Oh god, I’m a parent now. I don’t want my girls to end up that way.”‘
Drew has two daughters – Frankie, turning 11 next month; and Olive, 12 – from her four-year marriage to third ex-husband Will Kopelman, which amicably ended in 2016.
‘[It’s] another round of like being hard on that young girl,’ Barrymore said pointing to picture of herself as a preteen.
‘I wish I could pretend I had three daughters and I could try to nurture her. I can’t wait until I get to the place where I have time in my life and I can just focus on healing that young girl. How did any of us make it through? Being young is so hard. It’s the same for every single person.’

The Drew Barrymore Show producer-host famously started drinking alcohol by age 9, smoking marijuana by age 10, and doing cocaine by age 12 after starring in blockbusters like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Firestarter, and Irreconcilable Differences.
Drew’s then momager Jaid Barrymore – whom she eventually reconciled with in 2014 – would bring her along to nightclubs like Studio 54 before she got so out of control she placed her in an insтιтution for 18 months at age 13.
Barrymore returned to that very insтιтution, now called Healthy Living, for an emotional segment on her talk show in 2021 where she admitted she ‘was a real wild child.’

‘I just got so out of control that no one knew what to do with me,’ the Sherman Oaks native recalled while sitting on the roof of her Ford Bronco truck.
‘And so my mom called a friend because her daughter was out of control, and they drove me here in the middle of the night, and they walked me right through those two doors. And when you go through those two doors, you do not come out.
‘And I was there for a year and a half. And I hated it. I kicked. I screamed. One minute, you’re at movie premieres and clubbing, and the next minute you’re in a full blown insтιтution with barbed wire everywhere, and you can’t get out.’
Drew began sobbing as she compared her ‘wonderful life’ now to ‘what it was in this place.’
‘I thought I would be here forever. I never thought I was gonna make it to somewhere better. And I’m just so happy with my life. And I don’t know if I would have the life I have if it wasn’t for a place like this. So it was so important to come here today and just like honor this,’ Barrymore cried.
‘I will never lose sight of this part of my story. And I have seen and been through things, and they’ve helped me just recognize in all of us that we go through stuff and it can’t be embarrᴀssing. It has to be our strengths. It has to be something that we can be proud of because we overcame it and we look back with honor and humor.’
