Demi Moore’s daughter gives update on dad Bruce Willis amid devastating dementia battle

Rumer Willis gave an update on her father Bruce Willis just one day before the star’s 70th birthday which will take place on Wednesday, March 19.

The House Bunny actress, 36 – who recently enjoyed a playdate with daughter Louetta – opened up about the retired actor’s health during a Q+A session on her Instagram stories on Tuesday.

Back in February 2023, Bruce’s loved ones revealed that he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia – one year after he ‘stepped away’ from acting due to also battling aphasia.

In one reel, the mother-of-one was asked by a fan, ‘How’s your dad doing?’ and Rumer replied, ‘He’s doing great, thank you for asking.’

She then added, ‘It is actually his 70th birthday tomorrow so please wish my papa a big happy birthday.’

The eldest daughter of Bruce and Demi Moore could be seen filming the video while sitting in front of a comfy couch inside a spacious living room.

Willis and The Substance actress were previously married from 1987 through 2000 – and welcomed three children: Rumer, Scout, 33, and Tallulah, 31.

In 2009, the Die Hard star married Emma Heming and the couple also share two daughters Mabel, 12, and Evelyn, 10.

Last month in February, Rumer also gave rare insight into how her father was doing during an interview with ITV and expressed that the family has ‘rallied around each other.’

She shared, ‘He’s doing great. I think, obviously as many people in California, the thing we’re all kind of the most scared, dealing with is just fires and wanting to make sure everything is okay.

‘Because my family, we’re all so close, I think what’s so beautiful is the way that we rally around each other, [it’s] so lovely, because we really are a unit.’

Rumer then applauded Bruce and Demi’s relationship even after they divorced after 13 years of marriage.

‘I think the thing I’m most grateful for is that even when they split up, they created such a beautiful foundation of prioritizing my sisters and I, that I never felt like I had to choose or like, they never played against each other.’

She further expressed that, ‘We were a family, and we still are very much a family no matter what…

‘And not only did I feel like that has set me up in my life to have such a beautiful foundation of my own family, but now, as I’m working through co-parenting as well, I feel deep graтιтude for the example they’ve set.’

Earlier this month, Bruce’s wife Emma shared the shocking call she received from a ‘very prominent doctor’ as she cares for the retired actor amid his dementia battle.

She expressed on Instagram, ‘I received a call from a very prominent doctor the other day, letting me know that he has a family who’s just been diagnosed with young onset Alzheimer’s.

‘And they have three children aged 10, 12 and 14, and that he needs all of my resources, any contacts. And I was like: “Huh?”‘

Emma continued, ‘And I have the contacts, and nothing makes me happier than to be able to be of service and to support the next caregiver, which I happily pᴀssed on.

‘The thing that just boggles my mind is how do our doctors not already have a Rolodex of ways to support caregivers?’ the mother-of-two questioned to her followers.

‘The other thing that just is so upsetting to me is, when I receive messages from families that have just been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia or some type of dementia, and they’re asking me for my resources.

‘I’m not even in the same state as them, same city. It’s very hard to sort of pᴀss on those resources, except to like the ᴀssociation For Frontotemporal Dementia or things like that.’

Heming added, ‘But it’s just like, they need to do better. Doctors need to do better. Doctors really do need to have a road map of just some support.’

Rumer then applauded Bruce and Demi's relationship even after they divorced after 13 years of marriage; Demi and Bruce seen with Emma Heming as well as Rumer, Scout and Tallulah in 2019 in L.A.

Last month, she also shared a video to Instagram to help celebrate National Caregivers Day.

In the reel, Emma gave her fans advice on how to ‘show up’ for caregivers and also penned a caption to share ways to support them as well.

It read: ‘National Caregivers Day. Let’s move away from saying, “Let me know if you need anything,” and instead say, “Here’s how I can help you.” It’s tangible, actionable, and takes the burden off the caregiver to decide.

‘Be specific – offer real support. Drop off a meal, run an errand, or surprise them with their favorite coffee. Take the guesswork off their plate.’

She concluded with, ‘Caregiving is heavy, but support doesn’t have to be complicated. A small, thoughtful act can make all the difference.’

Last year in October,  Emma opened up about his dementia battle and expressed that she doesn’t ‘shield’ her daughters from the diagnosis.

During an interview with Town & Country Magazine, Heming explained, ‘This disease is misdiagnosed, it’s missed, it’s misunderstood.

‘So finally getting to a diagnosis was key so that I could learn what frontotemporal dementia is and I could educate our children.’

Emma added, ‘I’ve never tried to sugarcoat anything for them. They’ve grown up with Bruce declining over the years. I’m not trying to shield them from it.’

Heming added, 'But it's just like, they need to do better. Doctors need to do better. Doctors really do need to have a road map of just some support'

‘What I learned from our therapist was that if children ask questions, they’re ready to know the answer. If we could see that Bruce was struggling, I would address it with the kids so they could understand, but this disease is chronic, progressive and terminal.’

Heming told the outlet that their children don’t tend ‘to speak about the terminal side of this with them, nor have they asked.’

However, she expressed that Mabel and Evelyn ‘know that Daddy’s not going to get better.’

Emma said that she was not going to let ‘FTD to take our whole family down. Bruce wouldn’t want that,’ while adding that she hopes to help the ‘next family out there.’

Last month in February, Demi Moore gave an emotional update on Bruce during an interview with Variety.

The Golden Globe winner told the outlet, ‘We will always be a family, just in a different form.

‘For me, there was never a question. I show up because that’s what you do for the people you love,’ Moore added.

She then explained, ‘I hope it’s encouraging for others to see that there’s a different way to do things. There is life after divorce. There is a way to co-parent with love.’

In February 2023, Bruce’s family issued a statement on Instagram to reveal his FTD diagnosis.

At the time, they explained that it is the ‘most common form of dementia’ but added there are currently ‘no treatments for the disease.

‘As Bruce’s condition advances, we hope that any media attention can be focused on shining a light on this disease that needs far more awareness and research.

‘Bruce always believed in using his voice in the world to help others, and to raise awareness about important issues both publicly and privately,’ they added.

‘We know in our hearts that – if he could today – he would want to respond by bringing global attention and a connectedness with those who are also dealing with this debilitating disease and how it impacts so many individuals and their families.’
