Sarah Beeny issues a health update and announces her new charity role following her battle with breast cancer

Sarah Beeny has issued a health update and announced a new charity role after her battle with breast cancer.

The broadcaster, 53, was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2022 and underwent gruelling chemotherapy, as well as a double mastectomy, before receiving the all-clear in 2023.

The Property Ladder presenter’s mother had breast cancer the same as she did, but hers spread to her brain and she died when Sarah was just 10 years old. Sarah’s stepmother also died from a brain tumour.

Sarah revealed on BBC Breakfast on Thursday that she is now a patron of Brain Tumour Research – and is now calling for more research.

She said: ‘I’m very lucky, I had a very fortunate diagnosis. I’m fortunate that people like my mother, who died when I was 10, died and they did the research.

‘She won’t see her grandchildren, but she died so I can see mine.’

Sarah added: ‘I would like to see the amount of resources and efforts put towards finding a cure for brain tumour as has been done for breast cancer.

‘I’m not saying it’s always a good story, but it’s a lot better than it was 30 years ago.’

Sarah was given the all clear in April 2023 and in June 2024 she released her documentary Sarah Beeny vs. Cancer which detailed her cancer journey including her double mastectomy.

She then underwent gene testing to determine her family’s risk of developing cancer, after her own battle with the disease.

In an interview, Sarah discussed how she discovered she had a gene mutation which made her more likely to get the disease.

The results of the tests solidified Sarah’s decision to get a double mastectomy rather than a single as the gene meant she had a 50/50 chance of getting cancer again in the future in the breast that wasn’t already affected.

It also meant there is a 50/50 chance she will pᴀss the gene on to her children, sons Billy, Charlie, Rafferty and Laurie.

Sarah discovered that while she was negative for BRCA1 and BRCA2, she tested positive for PALB2, which could have wider implications for her children and potential future grandchildren.

After the results of the test some of the star’s family members decided to also get tested.

Her brother Diccon tested negative but her four sons are yet to get tested, while she also pᴀssed the information onto her auntie and cousins.

Sarah explained: ‘I gave them the control, it’s up to them what they do with it. It’s a very personal decision. I like the control, others may not want to know.’

It comes after Sarah recently opened up on how she navigated ‘bumps’ in her 22 year year marriage to husband Graham during her devastating cancer battle.

During the process, Sarah was supported by artist husband Graham, 51, and their four sons, but in a new interview admitted that things were not all ‘plain sailing’.

The Property Ladder presenter told how Graham had been her rock throughout her ill health and ‘stepped up’ when she needed to, but without going too far with his ᴀssistance.

She told OK! magazine: ‘There are bumps along the way in life and marriage – it’s not all plain sailing. But during my cancer treatment, Graham was absolutely as I’d expected him to be – great, because he’s a good man.

‘I don’t have a husband who will come in with tea trays, I don’t have a butler! But I don’t want one, I’d find that annoying. Whenever he’s needed to step up, he’s stepped up, and that was one of those times.’

The star went on to say that she encouraged her partner to open up to others if he was himself struggling with everything that happened as she confessed that she didn’t have ‘any space’ for her husband not to be strong.

She shared: ‘We had a conversation once. I said, “I know you might not be OK all the time, but don’t talk to me about that please. Can you talk to my brother or someone else?”

‘And he said, “Yes, I know.” I think he did talk to my brother and some friends. He knew I didn’t have any space for him not to be OK.’
