Carrie Underwood teared up for a surprising reason when making her debut as a new judge for season 23 of American Idol.
In one of the latest Idol trailers promoting auditions, the season four winner of the singing compeтιтion series was left misty-eyed when a 25-year-old mother, Breanna Nix, sang as her son sat on the Grammy winner’s lap.
In fact, Nix’s audition turned out to be a family affair, considering her husband played the piano as she belted out Underwood’s iconic Jesus, Take The Wheel in front of the judges that includes Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
Straight away, during her initial meet-and greet, Carrie offered to hold on to her little boy Emerson, who just woke up from a nap.
From there, the wanna-be Idol contestant was asked about herself, for which she introduced her husband Austin, and then revealed to the three judges, ‘I’m just a stay-at-home mom.’
‘Never say “I’m just a stay-at-home,”‘ Underwood, 41, told Nix. ‘That’s such a major job. You have the most important job.’

‘You ready,’ the new Idol judge asked Emerson, who was fixated on his mom while in the arms of Underwood.

After a brief piano intro by her husband, Nix went on to show off her big and beautiful vocals while singing the emotional ballad that appeared on Underwood’s debut studio album Some Hearts (2005).
And it didn’t take long before her rendition soothed her son long enough that he began to briefly fall asleep, which prompted tears from acclaimed singer-songwriter as he nodded off on her lap.
‘Luke,’ Underwood said through tears after Nix finished singing. ‘You OK over there?’ Bryan quickly responded.
‘I’m sorry. He’s just adorable and sweet and it got to me,’ the mother of two said while still emotional over the moment.
Nix then chimed in and explained how her boy has been mesmerized by the song, which was written by Brett James, Hillary Lindsey and Gordie Sampson, and that he often would become drowsy.
‘He’s been on so many car rides where he was going to go to sleep but I’d get on that chorus and he’d get on that chorus and emphasize the word ‘wheel.’
