Hairy Biker Si King pays emotional tribute to his late co-star Dave Myers on the one year anniversary of his tragic death

Hairy Bikers star Si King has paid tribute to his late co-star and friend Dave Myers with an emotional Instagram post on Friday, one year after his tragic death.

Dave pᴀssed away in February 2024 at the age of 66, with his family and co-star, 58, by his side following a lengthy battle with an unspecified cancer.

Si, 58, has worked to continue Dave’s legacy and his special documentary, The Hairy Bikers: You’ll Never Ride Alone, saw him close the chapter on an incredible 25 years of memories with his biking brother.

Now, marking a whole year since Dave pᴀssed away, Si wrote on the Hairy Bikers Instagram page: ‘One year ago we lost my incredible friend.

‘He’ll never be far from our thoughts and I’m so proud that the legacy of the Hairy Bikers lives on through all the amazing projects and programmes we have been lucky to be involved in. Remembering Dave Myers 1957-2024.’

He also shared a heartwarming black and white picture of the duo hugging and laughing.

It comes after fans were left sobbing after the show’s final episode which honoured Dave back in December.

Viewers were ‘in bits’ as they learned more about Dave, including how he learned to cook at the age of just eight while caring after his unwell mother.

The episode also followed Dave Day which saw Si and Dave’s widow Liliana lead thousands of bikers in an epic fundraiser as they rode from London to Barrow-in-Furness honour of the late TV star.

Taking to X fans branded the special ‘superb’ and an ‘incredible tribute’ with not a dry eye between them.

They wrote: ‘Is anyone watching this Hairy Bikers tribute to Dave on BBC2? I’m in bits’: ‘I’ve cried about ten times at the Hairy Bikers already’: OMG please tell me why I am actually nearly crying at Hairy Bikers remembering Dave special’: ‘That was a very emotional programme in memory of Dave Myers 50% of The Hairy Bikers. I swear if there is a god he takes the best first’.

‘The Hairy Bikers tribute to Dave was superb’: ‘My other half cannot believe this Hairy Bikers special JUST started and I’ve already got tears in my eyes’: ‘Bloody jell, this Hairy Bikers programme ain’t half got my bottom lip going’.

Si opened up about his grief and his plans for the future during a special screening of show earlier this month.

Reflecting Dave’s death he said: ‘Grief comes and comes and goes and goes.’

‘It’s important that I honour the Bikers’ legacy, and it’s important that I do stuff that I want to do still because Dave was very clear and adamant [that I did]. As I would want for him if the shoe was on the other foot.’

Si confirmed that the Hairy Bikers series would be retired, and future projects will be ‘very different’ without his long-time collaborator.

‘It would be different. That was Dave and I. He’s no longer with us. I would want it to be different. That’s very important.’

Si, who broke down in tears in the final episode, spoke poignantly about the courage Myers displayed during their final series together.

‘I was driving on the A1 north, and he rang me. He went, ‘King, it’s me. I’ve got something to tell you. Do you want to pull over?’ So I pulled over, and he told me that he had cancer.

‘I could only admire the courage of the man as we rode side by side once again. The last series that we did together, not just myself and Dave but all of our crew that we’d worked with for 10, 15, 20 years in some cases, was a testament to his determination.

‘He was absolutely adamant that he wanted to get back on the road, back on the bike, and feel like he wasn’t just a cancer patient anymore. He wanted to feel like one of the Hairy Bikers again, and I think that kept him going.’

Si said he feels a responsibility to preserve Dave’s memory and their shared legacy.

‘It’s my duty to look after his memory, to look after the legacy that he built, to look after the legacy of the Hairy Bikers. Dave was a joyous man. He embraced and loved the life that he led, and that was enormously important to him. That was the essence of my best mate.’

He then went on describe Dave as a ‘perfect example’ of brotherhood and community.

‘The programme was an exclamation mark. It was brotherhood, community, and an opportunity for people to openly grieve the loss of a decent, straightforward man.’

Reflecting on their connection, Si said: ‘There was a bond of brotherhood and kindness because we both had grown up in different ways.

‘As working-class lads, you just hustle, and you just hope. I think it was the essence of hope that brought us together. We recognised that in each other.’

He also shared a humorous memory of Dave’s initial encounter with his wife, Lil.

‘It was definitely love at first sight for Dave. I’m not sure it was for Lil. She was probably thinking, ‘Who the bloody hell are these two?’ But I could see it in his eyes. He said, ‘I really, really like her.’ I went, ‘Oh, no kidding. Do you? Shall we have a drink and talk about it?’
