Gabrielle is married to former basketball player Dwayne Wade. The couple tied the knot at Chateau Artisan in Miami, Florida in 2014 after a short eight-month engagement.
And this week, the actress opened up for the first time about her husband’s cancer diagnosis and how it has impacted their family.
The 43-year-old former athlete revealed his cancer diagnosis in January during an episode of his podcast The Why With Dwyane Wade, telling his audience that a surgery in December 2023 led to doctors removing 40 percent of his kidney.
Now, Gabrielle has explained that the year Dwayne was diagnosed was ‘very hard’ on their family, as she appeared on TODAY with Jenna & Friends on Wednesday.
She said: ‘Obviously, him getting that diagnosis was traumatic for him, you know, being faced with your own mortality in your early 40s.’

‘You’re like, “Am I going to be here to see my family? Who am I without this big life? Without this healthy body?”‘
She continued: ‘But you also don’t understand the journey and the toll it takes on your marriage, on your family, on your kids.’
Gabrielle explained that Dwayne was ‘a little more hesitant’ at the time to bring his family along on his ‘journey of healing’ from cancer.
She said: ‘That level of vulnerability, to go through removal of a good chunk of his kidney and the healing that involved, he needed us to be okay with his vulnerability.
‘But more than that, he needed to be okay with his vulnerability,’ she added ‘It was a challenge to give grace and receive it.’
During his podcast episode, Dwayne recalled that a routine checkup, where he expressed minor health concerns like stomach discomfort and a weaker urine stream, resulted in doctors discovering a tumour on his right kidney.

Gabrielle’s appearance at the screening comes after she spoke out for the first time about her husband Dwayne Wade’s cancer diagnosis (both pictured in 2022)
He said: ‘I didn’t go in for my kidneys, but because I did the full-body scan, they saw something.’
Dwayne explained that he hadn’t been keeping up with regular medical exams since he retired from the NBA in 2019.
He also added that he opted for the full-body exam after seeing his father undergo surgery.
When doctors found the tumour, Dwayne said the mᴀss couldn’t be biopsied. To confirm any cancer, the star claimed he required surgery, which he underwent in December 2023.
He added: ‘Thank God that I did do the surgery, right? Because the tumour was cancerous.’
