Hit comedy series with award-winning cast brutally axed despite glowing reviews

Hit comedy series The Sticky has been brutally axed despite its glowing reviews.

The TV show, created by Brian Donovan and Ed Herro, hit our screens in December last year.

The Sticky is loosely based on the story of the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist, which took place between 2011 and 2012.

Unfortunately just two months after its release on the streaming service, it has been confirmed that it won’t be back for a second series.

ᴅᴇᴀᴅline has reported that the programme ‘could not break through and draw wide enough audience despite solid reviews’.

The Sticky was released on Amazon Prime Video on December 6.

There were six episodes in the first season, starring the likes of Margo Martindale, Chris Diamantopoulos, Guillaume Cyr, Guy Nadon and Mickaël Gouin.

They were joined by Suzanne Clément, Mark O’Brien, Meegwun Fairbrother and Jamie Lee Curtis on our screens.

The choice to not renew the show is a shock as it was given 80% on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as 73% on the Popcornmeter.

One viewer wrote on the review site: ‘I really wasn’t expecting much, esp. with this being an Amazon original, but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. The language was a bit salty for my liking, but the characters were fun and quirky. As was the series overall.’

Another added: ‘I found this show very enjoyable. The on screen atmosphere was great, fun characters with great acting, story was fun. Look looked forward to every episode.’

‘I loved it. It reminded me a bit of Ozark but simpler, less dark, and even funny a times. Others reviewers said it’s like Fargo which I didn’t see but now I want to,’ a third chimed in.

A fourth wrote: ‘Sticky and sweet. Characters you can love and hate or love to hate. Who would have known maple syrup could be so crazy and fun. A bit quirky, a lot of laughs.’

A fifth chimed in: ‘Absolutely loved this series and can’t wait for Season 2.

‘I have fun usually trying to guess What Happens Next but the script was way too clever and had me hooked to find out what the next drama or development would be. Well done.’

‘Great fun, great acting. Based on true events and well worth your time,’ a sixth added.

IMBD’s synopsis of the show says: ‘When maple syrup farmer Ruth Landry finds her livelihood under attack by greedy compeтιтors who were once her friends, she concocts a scheme to exact revenge and shake up the industry.’

The Sticky was announced back in April 2022.

Christina Wayne, head of Originals, Canada at Amazon Studios said at the time: ‘We are thrilled to be working with this incredible lineup of talent behind the scenes to bring this story to life.

‘The Amazon Studios team in Canada couldn’t resist these characters and a story centred on delicious stolen goods is perfect for our Prime Video audience.’

Meanwhile producer Chris McCumber added: ‘The Sticky is a unique story that can only be set in Quebec and a crime caper that we think audiences around the world will enjoy.

‘Not only did it make total sense to partner with Amazon Studios’ development team in Canada, but Canada has some of the best talent working in front of and behind the camera.’

And co-showrunners Brian Donovan, Ed Herro and Kathryn Borel added: ‘This story, about an unᴀssuming band of renegades who managed to pull off perhaps the largest heist in Canadian history, caught our attention immediately.

‘The characters, stakes—all were ripe for tapping (pun intended) for our fictional story. We’re thrilled that we have world-class partners on board to bring our vision for to life.’

Watch The Sticky on Amazon’s Prime Video now.
