The film brought to life the true story of America’s 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a World War II military unit composed entirely of Black women.
Kerry triumphed in a fiercely compeтιтive category, besting Cynthia Erivo for Wicked: Part One, Lupita Nyong’o for A Quiet Place: Day One, Regina King for Shirley, and Lashana Lynch for the Bob Marley: One Love biopic.
Stepping up to accept her award, Kerry admitted she was ‘shocked’ to win, given the ‘extraordinary’ talent she was nominated alongside.
Beaming with excitement, she embraced Cynthia on her way to the stage, clearly overwhelmed by the moment.
‘Okay, you guys, you know, on awards shows, when people looked surprised, I never believed that they’re really surprised – except Beyoncé at the Grammys, that was like…,’ Kerry said, dramatically mimicking a stunned expression.
‘But I’m just shocked. I’m shocked because the women that I’m nominated with are so extraordinary, so extraordinary. I love you all so much and I’m honored to be in a category with you,’ the Scandal star continued.
She went on to express heartfelt graтιтude to her fans, family, and the creative team behind the film, including Tyler Perry, Netflix, and her fellow cast members.
