Denise Richards is ‘grateful’ she was able to be there for her ex Charlie Sheen’s twin sons with Brooke Mueller during a difficult time. 

In 2013, Richards became the legal guardian to their sons Bob and Max, now 15, after they were removed from Mueller’s home when she allegedly created an ‘unsafe’ environment for them.

Richards, who is starring in her upcoming reality show Denise Richards and Her Wild Things, told People of the time: ‘I’m grateful we were able to help them during that time.’

Richards’ relationship with Sheen and Mueller has since improved, and she is friendly with them and their twins. 

Now, her door is always ‘open’ for Sheen, Mueller, and their sons. 

‘Charlie is always invited to holiday dinners,’ she explained. ‘There’s always an open door and that goes for Brooke and the boys as well. I’m always, the more the merrier. I want everyone to get along and everyone to be peaceful.’

Mueller even makes several appearances on her new show, which follows Richards and her family. The star has daughters Sami, 20, and Lola, 19, with ex Sheen and daughter Eloise, 13, who, she adopted in 2011. Richards has been married to Aaron Phypers since 2018.

‘He’s been supportive from day one,’ she told the outlet of Sheen, whom she was married to from 2002 to 2006.

‘He saw the trailer and sent me such a wonderful sweet positive text,’ she continued.  ‘I was actually really surprised. It meant a lot to me.’

Sheen wed Mueller in 2008 – but their marriage was rocky as both had well-documented struggles with addiction. 

Sheen has been sober since 2017 while Mueller in September celebrated nine months of sobriety. 

During their marriage, Sheen was arrested for allegedly attacking his wife. Mueller claimed to police that the actor had held a knife to her throat and threatened her but she later tried to recant her statement.

He was arrested on three charges – second-degree ᴀssault, which is often used to describe causing actual bodily harm, menacing behavior, and criminal mischief, or damaging property. He was eventually released on bail after paying a £5,000 bond. 

Ultimately, Sheen pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of misdemeanor ᴀssault, which kept him out of jail. He was sentenced to 30 days in rehab, 30 days of probation and 36 hours of anger management, the AP reported at the time.

A year later, the couple split. Months later, the actor engaged in a series of now infamous public meltdowns in early 2011 that led to him being fired from the his hit sitcom Two And A Half Men.

Sheen and Mueller came to a custody agreement in 2011 and finalized their divorce shortly after. 

But Brooke allegedly created an ‘unsafe’ environment for the twins and they were removed from her home in 2013.

Richards became their legal guardian while Brooke re-entered rehab for the 21st time.

But after a year, the Wild Things star wrote to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to inform them that she could no longer look after the boys because of their alleged violent outbursts towards her daughters and dogs, as per TMZ.

In 2019, Mueller checked herself into a rehab facility once again and Sheen began co-parenting the twins with his and the actress’ parents. 

Charlie commented to The Blast about Mueller being in rehab, saying that their twin sons were well-cared for between him and their grandparents.

‘Brooke is currently tucked away, (yet again!) for the umpteen billionth time, seeking the help she needs,’ Sheen told the outlet.

‘Between myself, and the boys’ two amazing sets of Grandparents, we continue to seamlessly love shelter and protect Bob and Max, from the haphazard choices and unsightly behavior their mom refuses to extinguish once and for all.’

Sheen said that ‘these wonderful boys need their mom … and hopefully one day soon, they will finally have one … until then, on every front we got this.’

Last year Sheen and Mueller resolved their years-long child support case after Charlie had filed a request to pay less to his children in 2018. 

‘I have been unable to find steady work and have been blacklisted from many aspects of the entertainment industry,’ said Sheen at the time, who estimated that he paid both Mueller and Richards around 9.5 percent of his annual gross income.

Sheen said in court docs that the professional issues had ‘resulted in a significant reduction in [his] earnings.’

In 2023, Sheen claimed he is a ‘single father’ to his twin sons and that their mother is ‘not in the picture too much right now.’

He told People: ‘I’ve mostly been raising my 14-year-old boys. Their mom has been trying to figure some stuff out on her end, so she’s not in the picture too much right now.’

While Sheen and Richards have also had a difficult relationship, they are now on good terms. 

‘We’re absolutely friendly,’ Charlie told People in 2023. ‘We went through so much s*** together that I don’t think either one of us has any energy left to be divisive.’

‘The only thing that matters is the kids,’ Sheen added. ‘We knew we had to park our nonsense and focus on the children, because they had nothing to do with any of our crud.’

The actor went on to say their daughters were always a focus despite the parents’ intense feuding, which he referred to as the ‘H๏τtest portions of depths of the inferno.’

‘Now we’re super friendly, and we’re actually able to process so much of it through humor these days,’ he added. ‘You get a little distance, and it’s like, “Really? We were so upset about that?”‘

Richards’ new reality show will premiere on Bravo on March 6.
