Michael Jackson’s estate at odds with auction house over unreleased songs from late King of Pop: ‘Fans want to hear new music’

The estate of the late Michael Jackson is seeking to stop a New Jersey-based auction house’s effort to sell three cᴀssette tapes that contain recordings from the singer it claims are ‘unreleased & unedited.’

The auction – which was slated to commence Wednesday – was described as a ‘sad attempt by an auction site to mislead the public’ in a statement Jackson’s estate gave TMZ Tuesday.

In a page on its site, Gotta Have Rock and Roll lists the lot under the description ‘Michael Jackson Incredible Unreleased & Unedited Songs With Bryan Loren – Including “7 Digits”, “All The Truth You Need”, “Don’t Believe It” & More.’

The cᴀssettes are priced at a minimum bid of $85,000 and are expected to go for between $150,000 and $200,000, the auction house said.

The auction house’s CEO & Head of Consignments, Dylan Kosinski, explained the unique appeal of the items for sale in a statement to Dailymail.com Wednesday.

‘Fans want to hear new music, which is why the tapes are getting so much buzz and hopefully will sell to a collector who wants to listen to them,’ Kosinski said in an email.

Dailymail.com has reached out to reps for the Jackson estate for further comment on this story.

Jackson’s estate – which has been at the center of past family controversies – told TMZ Tuesday that they own the material on the cᴀssettes, which ‘are just copies of the original master recordings.’

The estate of the late King of Pop told the outlet that whoever wins the auction will not have the rights to copy the tapes – which it described as ‘a long-outdated format’ – or play them for the public, or they would violate copyrights.

Kosinski told TMZ Tuesday that Jackson’s estate has been ‘hoarding the master records in their vault only’ making the tapes scarcer – and as a result, more valuable.

Kosinski told Dailymail.com Wednesday, ‘That being said, what we are selling has absolutely no copyright, and CANNOT be reproduced/distributed by anyone who purchases them.’

Kosinski said of the cᴀssettes: ‘What we are selling is an artifact only.’

Jackson – whose biopic is presently facing delays – and music producer Bryan Loren worked together on the material on the cᴀssettes, Gotta Have Rock and Roll said in an item description on the sale page.

‘Presented here are two cᴀssettes, copied straight from the original DAT tapes, given to our consignor by Bryan Loren,’ the auction house said.

The auction house said that material featured on the cᴀssettes includes a previously-unheard ‘writing session version’ of the track 7 Digits, lending insights into the late Captain EO star’s creative process.

‘MJ is writing the song as he sings on this, so there are several takes of the song with MJ playing with lyrical ideas,’ Gotta Have Rock and Roll said. ‘He hadn’t come up with the theme of “7 Digits” yet on these early takes.

‘But, the music is the same as his final “7 Digits” song. In between takes, MJ is talking to Bryan in the studio directing him on music ideas.’

A ‘never before heard’ and ‘never leaked’ rendition of the track Truth On The Youth exclusively features LL Cool J, according to the auction house.

‘LL Sings Michael’s parts,’ said the auction house said. ‘A tour de force from LL doing everybody’s parts in the song. No MJ vocals on this song. LL did this version as a guide for MJ to sing his verses.’

An ‘original unedited version’ of the track work features Michael’s sister Janet Jackson on lead vocals, Gotta Have Rock and Roll said.

Gotta Have Rock and Roll added that ‘the lot also comes with an additional signed Michael Jackson pH๏τograph.’

The 13-time Grammy winner created the material in the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to the auction house.

Jackson created the songs prior to the release of his hit 1991 album Dangerous, which was released in November of 1991. The album – Jackson’s last release prior to his legal issues ensuing in 1993 – spawned the hit singles Black or White, Remember the Time, Heal the World and Will You Be There.
