Antiques Roadshow crowd gasp as guest learns life-changing value of his guitar with ‘absolutely incredible’ connection to music legends

The crowd at Antiques Roadshow gasped as a guest learned the life-changing value of his guitar that has an ‘absolutely incredible’ connection to music legends.

A guest brought his 1960s Fender Telecaster to the BBC show in an episode that aired on Sunday.

Revealing the impressive history behind the guitar, he explained to expert Marc Allum how the instrument was owned by two musical icons.

‘This was the guitar that Mike Oldfield used to record the electric guitar parts on Tubular Bells,’ he said.

The guest revealed how he managed to acquire the guitar and added: ‘Mike put it up for auction for charity in 2009 and it failed to sell, but I got an old copy of the catalogue and then contacted the charity direct, made them an offer and they thought about it for a few days and accepted it.’

Another musician also owned the Fender Telecaster – T. Rex band member Marc Bolan.

‘The other interesting thing was Mike got it from Marc Bolan. So it’s had two very famous players own it,’ the guest said.

Expert Marc Allum was taken aback by the guitar’s impressive ownership and described it as a ‘absolutely incredible’.

‘I think what’s incredible about this guitar is that it was Marc Bolan before. That’s a sort of a double-whammy on a guitar like this really isn’t it? It’s got history,’ Marc said.

He went on to add: ‘It is a good enough guitar in it’s own right to be worth a lot of money anyway as an original 60s Fender Telecaster.

‘So if we’re starting to kind of work it up and talk about it’s history and think about what it’s really worth, it was Marc Bolan’s to start off with – absolutely incredible. It then went on to Mike Oldfield’s, perhaps one of the biggest selling artists of all time.

‘How do we put a price on it? It’s really difficult.’

The guest revealed he originally paid ‘under £10,000’ for the iconic guitar and the crowd gasped as Marc gave his estimated value.

He said: ‘… I still think it’s worth a lot more than that and quite frankly I think if it were to come up to auction, I would put £20,000 to £30,000 on that guitar.

‘It’s a guitar with great history and I hope you enjoy playing it’.

It comes as a guest on Antiques Roadshow was floored when he learned the value of his film memorabilia collection.

Ron brought prized possessions he saved from a skip during his time working at Elstree Studios to the BBC show.

The grandfather surprised Antiques Roadshow expert Jon Baddeley with a Darth Vader helmet from the Star Wars set.

He also brought along an axe from The Shining and a medallion from Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark.

His film props were given a shocking valuation by Jon, totaling around £300,000, in an episode that originally aired back in 2017 and aired again on Sunday.

Antiques Roadshow airs Sundays on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.
