The 1% Club contestant takes home biggest ever prize on gameshow after risking everything to take on the final question

A contestant on The 1% Club took home the programme’s biggest ever prize after risking everything to take on the final question.

Hosted by Lee Mack, 56, the latest episode of the ITV quiz programme saw a contestant win a record-breaking amount.

The show sees 100 hopefuls answer 15 logic-based questions that were put to the public in hopes to win £100,000. The percentage who got it right determines its difficulty in each round.

Aptly, the final question is one that just 1 per cent of the public were able to answer and, last week, five contestants made it to that fateful moment.

Out of the group only one – Matthew Lock – chose to attempt the question which ultimately paid off.

He took home a whopping prize of £99,000, a number which has only been won by one contestant before.

As the final five reached the end, Lee explained: ‘You win a share of £10,000 [for making it this far]. But now you all face a dilemma.’

He continued: ‘You can choose to leave the show tonight and take your share, which works out at £2,000, or you can risk it all by attempting our 1% question. Get it right and you win your share of everything in the prize pot, which stands at £99,000.’

The final question read: ‘If you remove all of the underlined letters from the sentence below, what word can be spelt if you rearrange all of the remaining letters?’

It showed, ‘ANIMAL TO SHUN IN STAMPEDE,’ with several letters underlined in red.

Matthew was the only one to give the right answer, submitting ‘elephant.’

Lee announced: ‘Congratulations Matthew, you are the winner and get everything in the prize pot. You’ve just won £99,000.’

Matthew responded: ‘Crazy, can’t believe it… I nearly went out twice on the bride and groom question, and the one before that I was so close and I’d used my pᴀss before, but I saw it straight away.’

Back in 2022, Daniel O’Halloran from Bebington, Wirral, said his relatives ‘went nuts’ when they watched his episode of the 1% Club and discovered he had won the jackpot of £99,000.

During his episode, Daniel, a plant operator and footballer in his spare time for the local Heswall FC, declined the chance to walk away with £10,000 and risked it all for the grand prize.

Speaking to MailOnline afterwards, he said he decided not tell his family about his true winnings ‘for the fun of the surprise’, adding that it was ‘so worth it.’

He said he did tell his grandmother how well he really did because it was ‘especially nice to share the secret’ with her, adding that she ‘did so well’ in playing along.

Daniel also told a handful of trustworthy friends after being left stunned by his victory.

He added: ‘It was beyond anything I could’ve imagined… I thought I’d do well on the show but never imagined I’d win or even take on the final question.

‘I’d like to think of myself as smart and good at working things out… I wasn’t clever in school at all. I’m not an academic so made it through GCSEs okay but did really badly at A level.’

The 1% Club airs on ITV and streams on ITVX.
